Computer Science and Engineering :: UCONN Honors vs WPI vs RPI

I have been admitted to the Honors program at Uconn as well as WPI and RPI in the field of Computer Science/Computer Engineering and I am looking for advice on which school I should go to.

Which schools will lead to better jobs right out of college, a more pleasant experience and a stronger undergraduate program.

Thank you.

RPI versus WPI comes up a lot, as many students apply to both and choose between them. So do a search on “WPI RPI” and read the results, including some threads from earlier this year. My son picked WPI over RPI for these reasons: liked Worcester better than Troy, liked WPI’s “compact” campus, liked the project-based curriculum and Global Perspective Program, and since we spent more time at the WPI campus he got a better feel for the type of students who come there. Also WPI gave him a better merit scholarship. You can’t go wrong with either RPI or WPI - they are both excellent schools. I know nothing about UConn though…Check for earlier posts…

My son is currently a freshman at WPI as a Computer Science Major and he is very, very happy there.

He also had to decide between WPI and RPI, and was also admitted to UConn’s Honor Program.

He chose WPI because he really liked their project-oriented approach to education, he liked WPI’s proximity to Boston and Providence (where he has friends in school he can easily visit on weekends), he liked that WPI doesn’t have a core curriculum requirement or many prerequisites (e.g., you can take graduate course if you want), he liked WPI’s beautiful manageable “compact” campus, and the size of WPI/RPI vs. the large school environment of UConn.

My son has worked at software/web companies since age 15. A month after arriving as a freshman in late September 2011, he went to WPI’s career fair and handed out several resumes. In late October he had an interview with a company he met at the career fair, and the next day was offered a great paid internship/job for summer 2012. I do not believe he would have had this same opportunity at a large school like UConn…imho, but it is an excellent university!!

Good luck!!..all excellent choices!
