Computer Science AND Engineering

Hello !

I am a rising Junior in high school. I know it's too early for me to ask this question, but I'll still ask it anyway. =D

My question is, is it a good idea to major in Computer Science and minor in Computer Engineering ? !

I am just really really curious. I know I want to major in CS, but I don't know what my minor will be. I know it's too early for me to think about these things, but I just wanna have an idea about my future. I just don't wanna waste time and money, you know ? Also, I don't wanna cram everything after high school.

Your replies will be greatly appreciated. Thank you !

A minor is typically not required. You can major in CS, then take whatever courses that interest you in other subjects.

Also, at different schools, computer science and engineering may be combined, or there may be more flexibility in course selection. Note that computer engineering is usually more hardware oriented, studying topics like computer architecture, digital systems, integrated circuits, and software like operating systems that is “close to” the hardware.

If you care about areas where software interacts very closely with hardware - embedded systems, micro-controllers, operating systems, networking - having training in both might be beneficial professionally. If you care more about the software or theory side of computer science (whether that be computer vision, high-speed computing, cryptography, or programming languages), the computer engineering background will help you less but it won’t hurt you either.

If you don’t yet know what your interests are, don’t worry. You’ll figure it out soon enough when you start taking courses! Don’t feel compelled to make a decision on the computer engineering minor until after you’ve taken a computer engineering class or two. Also feel free to ditch computer science and stick with computer engineering if you like that better.
