Yesterday I tried to post a new thread titled, "I Want To Go to Grinnell." It documented our wonderful experiences at Friday's admitted student day. My words seem to have vanished into the ether, so I won't try to recreate them, but suffice to say Grinnell is an amazing school and the staff and faculty couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly.

I am a firm believer that a good liberal arts college like Grinnell is the best schooling choice a young person can make, but then I'm not the individual making the choice. I know that going to Grinnell will be the best four years of my son's life, but he is worried it might not be the right school for his intended career. At this time in his life he believes he wants to be a computer engineer, and the closest major Grinnell has to that is computer science.

I know Grinnell also offers a 3/2 engineering program with some very good schools (provided you pull down a 3.5 G.P.A.). I am wondering how many students have actually done this (it was a question we didn't ask) and how it worked out for them.

Has anyone heard anything about the computer science program? We did sit in on a class. I think my son fears a computer science degree from Grinnell might not open job doors in the way a degree from a more recognized "science" school would.

I was going to post a similar question.

How about UIUC compsci or Grinnell compsci?

or, applying similar size student bodies…

How about Grinnell compsci or Rose Hulman compsci ?

Anyone?

Why not contact Grinnell’s Career Development Office at
career@grinnell.edu and ask them about resources to help Comp. Sci students with job placement. (Sue Barnes send out the newsletter every month with new opportunities for internships, jobs, etc…) And contact the Comp. Sci dept about where their graduates go for advanced degrees, how many actually to the 3/2, etc…

The great thing about a small, ‘user friendly’ school like Grinnell is you can pick up the phone and talk to the people in charge and they are not just willing, but actually happy to talk to you. (And don’t forget to share what you find out here!)

Thanks, M’s Mom. You’re right - you can just call people at Grinnell. At some schools you just don’t want to try and navigate the bureaucracy.

Since no one responded to my initial post (until yesterday), I looked through some old CC Grinnell threads and found one that dealt with the 3/2 and computer science (from 2006).

The good news (his parents knew it was the right choice for him - and hoped he would come to that decision on his own) is that my son decided to go to Grinnell even though they don’t have computer engineering. The two other schools he was considering are polar opposites of Grinnell - the Naval Academy and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo - so I am confident he made the right choice. I don’t think a California, vegetarian, free thinking, more liberal than not kid, would have been happy at the other schools. And after three years if he really wants to pursue engineering then he still can - but my guess is he won’t want to leave Grinnell.

After my tour of the campus with him three weeks ago I came away saying, “I wish I could go to Grinnell!”
