computer science and tennis

Hey everyone! I have two questions about MIT. I have some very specific computer science major questions but when i went to email them, i didn't know who to. There are so many faculty members on the website. I don't know who is the appropriate person to ask. Any ideas?

My second question is that: I love playing tennis and it is my passion. Yet, i am not a tournament player (i am decent). I play 3rd Singles in my team. Is it still worth it for me to contact the MIT tennis coach? I really want to play tennis is college but I don't want to waste a coach's time if I think that he won't think I am that good.

I know my questions are confusing. Sorry! i couldn't phrase them any better. (I am indian so my english isn't exactly top notch)

If you feel you're interested in playing tennis in college, you should go ahead and contact the coach. (The recruitment form is here.) He or she will be able to give you a better idea of the caliber of students who make the school team, and won't be angry or feel that you're "wasting" his or her time.

As for questions about a major, you're probably better off asking the MIT students on this board rather than trying to email faculty members. In my experience, faculty members often know a lot about the structure of courses they personally teach, but they often aren't too knowledgeable about current major requirements or general institute requirements.

If you are convinced you need to discuss your questions with the department, the best person to contact is probably the undergraduate course administrator, Anne Hunter. Her contact information can be found from this page.

gee thanks a lot Mollie!

Of course. :)

Sorry to jack the thread, but is it wise to contact coaches even if you've never done the sport? I'm REALLY interested in doing several sports, actually, and was wondering if I should contact those coaches and submit multiple recruitment forms... even if I've had no experience in those sports.

I think it might be useful to find the emails of the coaches and ask them -- most of the recruitment forms go to the same email address, so it might not be particularly useful to fill out the form multiple times.

There are a number of people on many (most?) of the MIT sports teams who have never played before, so it's certainly not an issue they've never encountered, but I think it would be better to contact them individually if you don't have any previous experience.

I think you should contact all the coaches. I believe I had recommendations written by two coaches.

Please do NOT email professors about your questions. They will NOT reply to you (not because they are mean-spirited, but simply because they are WAY too busy with other matters). If you have Computer Science-related questions, post them here or read the online FAQ that Mollie pointed out:
