So I’m about to finish my first year at Tech and I’m thinking it might be time to switch colleges. I’ve been hearing that the CS department here is awful. I think that might be the case because my first programming course was awful. The professor I had couldn’t teach to save his own life, the work was way more intensive than it needed to be. The building is infested with asbestos. However my second programming course has been great, in that the instructor was so much better. Another reason why I’m thinking of changing schools is because I’ve been so unhappy. What do you guys think should I transfer to a different college?
" Another reason why I’m thinking of changing schools is because I’ve been so unhappy." - I suspect this is the main reason, perhaps you should have started off with this instead of stating lies, like “the building is infested with asbestos.” Sounds like you are unhappy & a move is the best thing for you.
CS - so much in your first post. I’ll try to address a few things.
First, let’s start with your major. You implied that this was your first year of programming. Did it click for you? I have two sons who are CS students at another university. They will program in their spare time because they are passionate about it. I’m not saying that you need to be that excited about CS, but programming will be your life for at least the next three years. If that does not sound appealing, then yes, you should research other majors.
Second, your unhappiness at Tech. Your experience at Tech overall will affect your experience as a CS major. You need to explore why you have been unhappy. Just relocating to a new campus might not solve an underlying issue. (Also, my guess is that if Tech has an asbestos issue, then other universities do, as well.)
I do not know what type of advising/counseling services are provided at Tech, but I highly recommend discussing this someone who is more knowledgeable regarding your situation and options.
Best wishes to you.
