I love Programming. I knew it was going to be what I wanted to study since freshman year. But my grades were never consistent. I got C’s and B’s all of freshman year. Then soph year I stepped up and got mostly A’s and a couple B’s. Junior year I decided to get straight A’s. and now its my senior year and I’m looking to work hard again. I’ve taken about 9-10 AP/IB and around 5-6 Honors courses. My SAT is a 1430. I calculated my UC GPA and its a 4.05. Throughout highschool I participated in sports, community service, clubs, state competitions, hack a thon, coding academy teaching and recently took a coding internship over the summer. I received many awards from the internship, community service, and the coding academy. I have multiple leadership positions for my clubs and my best one is def being the leading/captain intern during the summer. I worked hard on my Essays over the summer and I talked about the things I love: My coding internship and my leadership effect, passion for comp sci, how magic/card magic shaped my way of thinking, and the importance of how dancing makes me unique. I know this is a lot of reading and I am very sorry, but with the grades I have and my mediocre SAT, I really want to study computer science. If I could go back I would def work harder freshman year and soph year, but anyone can say that right? Overall UCi seems perfect for me: great comp sci program, job opportunities/location is ideal, many clubs to join, food is awesome, etc. Please let me know what you guys think. Looking over at last years 2021 results I am very scared/nervous. I thought I would be a solid candidate but now I’m not sure at all…I know UCSD/UCLA is where everyone wants to go, but me personally Im super happy with UCI and really believe its what i do in college that determines my career, and not the actual name. Anyways thanks if you read this far and what are your opinions? Thank you!
I am sort of familiar with Computer Science kids applying to UCs. Every year, it’s gotten tougher to get into UCSD and UCI for competitive majors. But if I were on UCI adcom, I would accept you if it makes you feel better.
Average UC capped weighted GPA 2017 for admitted UCI CS majors was 4.11 and SAT of 1402. You are within range so you have a good chance. Hopefully you listed an alternate major just in case since UCI admits into the University first, then into the major. You could get into UCI but not into CS.
Changing into CS is not that difficult but there is no guarantee if you complete the required courses, that a spot will be available.
Just apply widely since CS and the UC’s continue to get more competitive. UCR and UCSC have very good CS programs and you are a solid Match/Low Match for these schools.
I would add a couple of Cal States to your list as possible Safeties: CSU Fullerton and Cal Poly Pomona.
Best of luck and just remember where you go for undergrad will not define you, it is what you do with the opportunities you are given.
@websensation thanks sm! Hopefully I can get in
@Gumbymom thank you! Hopefully they view my essays and ecs highly because I view them as my strongest points…
1430 = “my mediocre SAT”
Man, I’m so glad I applied to college back in the 80s. It’s crazy the standards I see promulgated here. 1430 is not mediocre.
This is kind of a diversion from OPs post, but with a 4.22 capped/weighted and 4.44 fully weighted UC GPA + a 1500 SAT (720 RW/780 M) + an 800 on the SAT II Math 2, do I have a shot at a regents scholarship at UCI? Thx!
