I completely rescind my statement from above.
On March 23, I received an email from UW with this:
“Congratulations on your admission to the University of Washington! On your application to the UW, you indicated Computer Science as your primary major of interest. We considered all freshmen accepted to the UW who selected the Department of Computer Science and Engineering as their first choice major, but are only able to offer direct admission to a small percentage. You will see on your offer materials your major is listed as “Pre-Physical Sciences.” This academic status allows flexibility to explore academic options in your first year and take the pre-requisites to apply to Computer Science and Engineering as a sophomore if you are still interested…”
^Don’t know about you, but that totally sounds like rejection to me–especially when I know other students already got DA into UW CS.
Today (April 6), I received another email from UW and a letter from them saying I got directly admitted to their CSE program. Here’s the beginning of the email:
“Welcome to CSE!
We’re happy to welcome you to the Computer Science & Engineering department at the University of Washington, through our special offer of Direct Admission.
Direct Admission means you begin at UW as a Computer Science or Computer Engineering major, with full access to CSE resources and opportunities. We offer Direct Admission to a very small number of students: this year, we selected less than 5% of eligible UW freshman applicants for CSE DA…”
I checked my unofficial transcript and it indeed still has Pre Science listed as my major.
Gist of the story is: Having “pre science” listed as your major on your unofficial transcript does NOT mean you didn’t get directly admitted to UW’s CSE program!
