Hi there, I’m currently a high school student who would like to study computer science at UMass Amherst. Unfortunately, my GPA is a 2.9 and my composite SAT score is a 1710. I live right near Boston, MA with access to the orange line. What would be a good place to look at in order to transfer to UMass Amherst after my first or second year? Where should I try?
Any community college! It doesn’t matter so much where you go but how well you do. If you do amazing at a CC and raise your SAT score then you’ll be a good shot fot Umass.
Bunker Hill CC is just off the orange line.
I don’t know how their computer science program transfers though.
I don’t really know either. According to UMass Amherst’s site, comparably difficult courses from an accredited institution will generally be allowed. But I don’t know the specifics.
http://www.mass.edu/forstudents/admissions/TransferAdmin/PublicList.asp suggests that BHCC has a MassTransfer plan to UMass Amherst for CS.
http://www.bhcc.mass.edu/transfer/transferprograms/masstransfer/ describes the MassTransfer admission criteria.
http://www.bhcc.mass.edu/programsofstudy/programs/computersciencetransferoption/ is the suggested course schedule at BHCC for CS transfer students. Comparing the course offerings to the UMass Amherst CS major at https://www.cics.umass.edu/ugrad-education/details-bs-requirements indicates that you probably want to take the following at BHCC to prepare for transfer:
CIT 120 Introduction to Computer Science
CIT 239 Java Programming
CIT 242 Data Structures
MAT 281 Calculus I
MAT 282 Calculus II
MAT 283 Calculus III
MAT 291 Linear Algebra
PHY 251 College Physics I
PHY 252 College Physics II
ENG 111 College Writing I
ENG 112 College Writing II
other general education as described at http://www.bhcc.mass.edu/transfer/transferprograms/
Unfortunately, it seems rather difficult to find a course-to-course articulation agreement between various public universities and community colleges in Massachusetts.
Thanks a bunch for that list, it seems like something that I should talk to them about. The information on it is really hard to find.
