computer science

It does not seem like computer science is mentioned on CC very often in the Clemson thread. But Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges 26th & 27th editions opinion of Clemson is rated very highly for this major. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
Also, as other posters have mentioned that Clemson in not very close to a real city. As far as internships go is the University very instumental in helping find summer internships. They are so important to most majors in theis highly competitive world.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I’m not exactly sure how it compares with other colleges but anything science and engineering related at Clemson is a pretty good bet.

Clemson is in the middle of nowhere but is 2 hours from Atlanta and Charlotte and companies in the Southeast know the Clemson name very well.

That’s a lot of information…thanks so much. Now if this is a career fair do you know if it is for seniors only or for internships for undergraduates also?

3/4 of those companies are looking for interns as well. I’m a sophomore and I’ve been told to definitely check out the career fair to network and look for internships.

What about the co-op program? Do those students usually co-op in Clemson or the big cities? Because then there would be an issue of housing. Pierre, do you know anyone in the co-op program?

It really varies, I know some people who co-op in nearby Anderson and are able to commute from their apartment in Clemson (there are a few companies nearby like Michelin). Others go to Atlanta, Greenville or all over the US.

I’m actually starting the co-op process this week (should be working on my resume right now) so I’ll definitely find out more info about the program soon. Some companies that I’ve seen that hire co-op programs provide housing or give you a “living allowance”, on others you’re on your home but they’d be happy to give you some suggestions (I was offered an internship in the middle of nowhere NC last year and even though I declined, they offered to find some leads for me in terms of housing). I wouldn’t really worry too much about it.

Thanks Pierre - Now get to work on that resume! I would love to hear how your co-op experience goes. I’ve been reading up on it trying to figure out if it’s actually a good way to help pay for college or not. I guess if housing is covered then it would be. But if not, then you’d probably end up spending most of your pay check on housing.

well let’s be fair here, co-op isn’t exactly about making money, it’s about gaining experience and making your post-college resume impressive. If you can find an amazing co-op position and you have to spend your pay check on housing, I would probably take it even though I would break even.

Oh, don’t get me wrong – I totally agree with you! I’ve just been looking into all options I can think of because I have a son who wants to go to Clemson, but we’re OOS and frankly I’m not sure we can swing it. So if co-oping would end up helping pay for his tuition as well as give him experience, then it would be a double blessing.

ah gotcha, I def understand your reasoning now. Well, I’ll keep you posted on my co-op experience and if I hear about anything from other people!

That would be awesome - Thank you! Good luck to you as you interview for that.
