Computer Science

I will be applying for colleges soon. I wanted to make sure that I apply to ones that are good for me. I am from Gainesville, Fl. I will be applying to USF, UCF and UF in florida.

USF is a "sure shot". UF is at my level. If I go out of state I would like to go to something better than UF or a school that pays the tuition because otherwise it wouldn't be worth it.

Does anyone know of good computer science universities that meet the following criteria:

Good assistance tuition and living. (UF I think is underfunded.)

Good quality of life: For me this means, no accelerated programs, and not a crazy workload.

Supportive advisors/mentors.

Comprehensive curriculum, so that I will be well prepared for the future. (FSU for instance has only two specializations both which I am not interested in.)

Location: mostly on the east coast. I don't know if I would go to Washington or California.

I looked at Carnegie Mellon, and I liked it. But it's private!
Also, I looked at UT Austin but they supposedly have a 10% rule or something like that.

Any ideas would help. Thank you.

What’s wrong with going to a private school? If you want to go to a public school out of state, you won’t receive much Financial aid right?

Anyways, how about Georgia Tech? Pretty close to Florida, it’s one of the relatively less expensive public colleges, great for CS. However, it probably is pretty rigorous in terms of coursework so I don’t know if you’d like it there, but since you were considering Carnegie Mellon, it’ll be around the same difficulty.

Just my 2 cents.

There is nothing wrong with a private school, only that I don’t know if I would be able to afford it. I don’t know how much financial aid I would receive.

Are we supposed to guess at your stats?

;)

And how much will your parents pay?

Are you asking for my GPA and GRE scores?
I got my undergrad in something else I am currently taking pre-reqs to get into the masters program. My overall undergrad gpa was 3.16, biology related gpa was 3.7. My gpa in cs classes is about a 3.9.

The gre I will be retaking. The first time I got 158 Quant. and 156 Verbal, which I thought were weak since the powerprep 2 test I took I got 162 Quant and 160 verbal. I had a bad test day. I will take it in the morning so that way I won’t be sweating in my car by the time I get there.

My parents will pay for nothing. 0. nada. I wish I could count on them.

Colleges now have net price calculators on their web sites. Use them to get financial aid estimates.

Are you looking for grad schools, than? There is a separate forum for grad school questions, this one is for undergrad admissions so that’s what everyone is assuming for answers to date, and NPC isn’t applicable. Most people’s parents don’t pay for their grad school.
