Concerning video on youtube

Photographer Mom. You succinctly summarized Miley Cyrus’s adult “career.” :)

All kidding aside, whatever happened to cotillions and Lester Lanin or at the very least Vince Giordano?

Yeah, I was expecting a Whit Stillman movie.

@ChoatieMom: Indeed. I did not spy a stitch of J. Press clothing in that video. Appalling.

Thank you, Periwinkle. :)

every school has dirty dancing

I was actually relieved when I saw the video, I’ve seen much worse at middle school dances! I’d be happy if that’s all that was going on at the dances…

Lester Lanin LOL! He played at my college prom!

I will say that these types of dances are going on in many schools across the nation. Trying to control a dance which turns into a rave with quite a bit of grinding and clothing malfunctions  is not an easy task. Students are obscured from view of chaperones and dance in the center of large circles, which are 10-15 students deep. In one of our schools, administrators erected a platform in the middle of the gym so they could watch above and over the crowd and it was still not effective in keeping this rave style partying in check. Fewer dances are held in our district and many students choose not to attend as they don’t like the rules and security and others don’t attend because they do not like the atmosphere and don’t want to watch other kids having sex while dancing.

Lester Lanin, 1907-2004. RIP.

He is quoted as having said, “if you rest, you rust”, as Lester didn’t want to take vacations. So, interpret the “R” however you will.

Well, you finally made me break down and watch it and although I’d rather have a colonoscopy and a root canal on the same day than watch or attend one of these, I pretty much assumed all student dances everywhere were like that now. No? When was the last time you heard, “Mom, may I wear your pearls?” or “Dad, can you teach me to waltz?”

…or when the Bee Gees were on a playlist… any playlist :)

Oh, sorry- that’s another thread!

jahphotogal: He played at my wedding!

@Charger78: Well, Lester may no longer be with us, but I think there is a band that carries on the tradition…I wish I had saved my hat from the one ball I attended where they were the entertainment.

While I think you all may be correct that “all student dances are like that these days”, I simply ask “Why?”

Why? Because it’s fun. Why else?

Our kids learned how to dance “properly” when they were younger. They didn’t enjoy it, but at least I have some level of confidence they can hold their own if they have to.

I’ve always liked Lester, but I love Peter Duchin!

I’ve watched my kids dance around the house with/ without ear buds and it’s pretty hilarious … I just crack up. I can only imagine what they’re like at a BS rave, I mean dance. I’m sure the girls swoon…

SO – Last night after all these Lester Lanin references here, I went to say goodnight to my D and found her working on a history paper and listening to… Sinatra! I couldn’t believe it, I usually hear Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars etc. blaring from that iPod. I said “So, what’s with the music?” She gave me that look – you know, the one that says “I cannot believe you are even asking me this question”… and she said “It’s Frank, Mom. I like him. He helps me focus.” And she went back to work. I got to hear more of Frank all the way to school this morning. Now, I don’t mind… I like him, too. But I couldn’t help wondering whether she’s trying to prank me. ;)

I consider myself blessed that my children don’t listen to horrible music.

@cameo43 Lester played at my wedding too! My youngest listens to the same music I listened to in BS (some of which I now consider pretty horrible!) and I listen to mostly college/alternative music so in my house we are all equally likely to annoy each other.
