Concerns about Umich GPA and PSAT

Hi,

I'm wondering how holistic Umich is when looking at GPA. It seems that someone like me who took hard classes in the core classes, which lowered my GPA would get rejected as opposed to someone who took all easy classes and aced the core classes. Why doesn't Michigan weigh in other factors like difficulty of courseload (I'm an IB diploma candidate, and took AP chem and precalc, 2 of the hardest classes in the school as a sophomore) into account? So yeah, how much will Umich look at difficulty when determining whether they want me or not.

Also, I just got back my PSAT, and I got a 67 CR, 73 math (so I should get about 1400 old), but I only got a 47 on Writing, which is beyond pathetic. How does Umich look at SAT writing?

I hate to post again here, but I'm really confused about GPA, and frankly, it doesn't seem fair that people challenging themselves are getting punished

Most, if not all, schools will recalculate your GPA - there are so many different scales out there that they have to do this to compare. Whether you have taken the hardest classes offered is a separate consideration and you will get credit for doing this.
Don't worry too much about PSAT scores - with my daughter they were not a good indicator of SAT - she scored 200 points higher (without writing) - your score is great and will most likely improve. From what I understand Michigan is one of the schools that really doesn't look at the writing section yet which was bad for my d because she scored highest on this section with a 12 on the essay.
