Concerns and questions about Cal States and UC grades and admissions

Hello! I just have a single question that I can’t seem to get ANY help on. Okay so I’am a sophomore in high school and I recently remembered I got a D second semester in algebra 1. I got a B the first which is weird I know, but second semester the teacher slacked off even more then usual. He screwed us all over. My counsler spoke to him and he said I was ready for geometry. But now my question is: do Uc’s or CSU’s accept a single D? I am mostly concerned about CSU’s but still it’s best to have more options. Also keep in mind I will never have a D in a class again because I do NOT plan on letting myself get pushed around and learn nothing by some teacher. Please help me. Thank You.

Title edited for clarification

Math Validation is only for Cal states and UC’s.

A 2nd semester grade of C or higher in Algebra 1 will validate the 1st semester D in Algebra 1 . A passing grade for Algebra II/Trig both semesters will validate a D or F for Algebra 1.

See the link and page 18: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2017.pdf

If you do not repeat the Algebra 1 class and you took it 10th or 11th grade, then your D will be calculated into the CSU/UC capped weighted GPA.

Yes the UC’s and CSU’s do accept a D grade but unless you repeat that semester, the D will be included in UC/CSU capped weighted GPA which could impact your chances at the UC’s and some CSU’s. Taking Algebra II/Trig and getting a passing grade of C or higher, will validate your Algebra 1 D grade but not replace that grade.

Great thank you so much! Also, if I take US history over the summer how will my school and colleges be notified of it? Will it appear on my transcript? I was going to take AP US history on my actual school campus next year (junior year) but I decided I didn’t want to have three ap classes. The other ones being AP language and AP Environmental Science. Or, should I just take AP US history at my school? Because I heard AP environmental history isn’t that big of a work load, + I LOVE science. What would u recommend?

Also, is it possible to validate the semester D in algebra 1? But I don’t know how… even after I did a ton of research.

If you are not taking US History at your HS then you need to find out how your HS will deal with the class and if it will show up on your current HS transcript or if you need to request another transcript from the school where you are taking the course.

If the course is offered at your HS, that would be the preferred route unless you have a schedule conflict. Depending upon the teacher, US History can be a lot of work. AP Environmental Science is considered not as time consuming as US History and if you have an interest in the subject, then it should be fine. Only you can gauge how much work you can handle but 2-3 AP’s Junior year are about average.

You’re amazing!!! One last thing for today, I’ve been a community service club but I just want to know how colleges will see that I am involved and not just at home wasting my time on technology? Like how will they even be aware that I am an active member of the club. Also how many clubs do you belive I should be in in order to ‘stand out’?

Reporting your EC’s is on the honors system, so on the UC application you will list the community service club as a member and state your hours/week you devote to the club. Only a small percentage of applicants will be asked to verify with documentation their EC’s so you can have the advisor document your time involved if needed.

Cal states do not consider EC’s except for SLO (which only asks hours/week) so you will not need any documentation.

There is no specific number of clubs that will make you stand out. You are better showing passion for 1-2 clubs, then being involved in many. Work on obtaining a leadership position with your service club which can help your chances.

Thank you!!

What are the benefits of taking a science senior year ? And should I also take a math senior year because I had a D freshmen year in algebra 1?

Taking a Math and Science Senior year depends on many factors:

  1. Have you met the minimum a-g course requirements for each?

  2. Do you have interest in additional science courses and will you pursue something science related? If so, then taking a Biology, Chemistry and Physics course will make you competitive.

  3. What do you plan to study in college and which schools do you plan to apply? The more a-g courses above the minimum you take, will make you a more competitive applicant.

  4. Will you have at least Pre-Calculus completed by end of Senior year? The majority of majors now require some sort of Caclulus in their college curriculum, so having at least Pre-Calculus will help you towards doing well in college math courses.

I heard that early college admissions are at the end of junior year, is this true? If I apply earlier do I have a higher chance of getting in? Then if I take on another math and science how will they know that I am now a ‘competitive applicant’ senior year if I had applied early.

First, application deadlines are school dependent so if you are planning to apply to the Cal States and UC’s, then their deadline is November 30th of Senior year. ED (Early Decision) deadlines can be late October to early November and CSU’s and UC’s do not offer ED/EA only RD (regular decisions). Many schools have rolling admissions and you can apply in August prior to Senior year and will hear back by Fall.

All schools will ask for your Senior year schedule so it will make no difference if you apply early or not, but many will ask for Mid-year Senior transcripts so you want to make sure you select classes you will do well in. Also all college acceptances are provisional meaning that you need to pass your Senior classes with acceptable GPA and grades or your admission could be rescinded.

Okay good to know. I have another question hehe. Does a ‘C-’ count count as acceptable for my A-G requirements?

Yes, a C- does count as an acceptable grade for the a-g course requirements. For the UC application, +/- ‘s are not reported so a C- is a C for application purposes. For the Cal states, you would report the C-.

Wow that’s very good to know. I would have thought UC’s would count it as a (C-). So, which college system greater quality education? I know some UC’s are better than some Cal states and vise versa. Which system is more difficult to get admitted into?

UC’s in general are more difficult to get an acceptance but UC Merced and Riverside are on par with many of the Cal States and some of the Cal states such as SLO and SDSU can surpass some of the UC’s with their particular programs. I had one son attend a UC and another a CSU and both are doing well post graduation. Much will depend upon your UC/CSU GPA, test scores and intended major.

The Cal States admit based on your GPA, test scores, intended major, HS course rigor and geographic location (within the local service area).

The UC’s admit based on your GPA, test scores, intended major (for most UC’s), HS course rigor, Essays, EC’s, socioeconomic status, geographic location and special talents so more criteria.

If you want further information about the CSU’s and UC’s, you can post here or send me a PM.

Is there a UC San Fran and a Cal state San Fran?

UC San Francisco is a graduate school only so no undergrad programs and they focus on health related programs.

SFSU is the Cal State in San Francisco (SFSU). There is also USF (University of San Francisco) which is a 4 year Jesuit private university.

Okay good to know. Do you know any good CA university’s that have a good physicians assistent (PA) programs for undergrad students? I’am also confused about like what program I would like take. Like is it called ‘PA’ program or is that just for after I get my bachelors degree (masters). So what would I major in? Medicine? Health? Some type of Science? What’s the difference between a major and a minor ?
