Conflicting Information

My BGO called today. She just spoke with the new Regional Director for my area. Right now, I'm on deferred status until semester grades are received. I'll get the grades on Monday, Feb. 14th.

My question is this: When I was deferred, my then RD told me that my file would be reviewed again by the Admissions Board upon receipt of the semester grades. Now, I'm being told by my BGO that the new RD said the file may not go to the Board--I'm referred to NAPS and Foundation. Someone in Admissions is supposed to carefully review my file--I faxed the unofficial semester grades--and make a decision as to if the file goes to the Admissions Board or if the deferral sends me to NAPS or Foundation.

I have an Appointment to West Point--but I want the Naval Academy. Any input on this would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Doug

Doug,
I sent you a PM.

Doug, by all means let your BGO & RD know you have an appointment to West Point but your first choice is USNA. That should at least get you into NAPS in my opinion.

My BGO and RD KNOW I have an Appointment to West Point, and they KNOW that USNA is my first choice. I have Foundation, and I was told this morning that I'm in the NAPS pool.

Apparently, my file went before the Board when the Academy received my updated SAT scores. According to my RD, the file might not go before the board again. This is disappointing, especially since my semester grades are strong. I have this sick feeling right now.

I have a new RD, and I don't want to go over her head, but I'm running out of options. Any ideas anyone?

Doug

Doug, that's great news about Foundation and NAPS! I thought though, that if you were given Foundation, you wouldn't be offered NAPS. Nice to know that you are in the running for NAPS too!

What do you mean going over your RD's head? It sounds like you've done everything you could and now you just have to wait. It's frustrating I know, but right now you should be focused on the excitement of receiving an appointment to West Point. :) Go celebrate!

I am currently at NAPS and can say that there are certainly advantages as well as disadvantages with going that route instead of going straight into the academy. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me or respond to this post.

Ashley

Ashley,
Could you please share with me some of the most significant pros/cons for NAPS? What do you think of NAPS? Why did you end up going with NAPS? Thank you for your help.
ZN

sorry about that, I clicked the submit button without finishing up

here are the cons
- you go through 2 indoctrination periods
- you give another year of service
- you see that some of the friends that you have made here wont make it to the academy
- the academics here at NAPS are more demanding than the academy (have talked with other napsters who are at the academy now)

oh this is another pro-
you spend a week at USNA living with a plebe so you can see if the academy is really the place you want to be

hopefully this has helped

ashley

I won't mention names, but I was told by Admissions that since I accepted the Foundation offer (which was VERY CLEARLY stated as an "insurance policy" and that I would still be considered for direct admission) "things have changed" and that is no longer the case. Admissions told my Mom (they called when I was in school) that essentially, there was nothing else I could do.

The next day, my Mom called Foundation, and found out that they just want to minimize the amount of paperwork if Candidates switch at the last minute to USNA from Foundation.

I won't say much here, put you can PM me if you have any questions. Suffice to say that I'm really glad to be going to CVW next week, so that I can speak with Admissions directly. I have an Appointment from West Point.

Also, I was told that the Naval Academy is trimming down their class this year--only 1150 in the Class of 2009 student body. Has anyone else heard this?

Thanks,

Doug

Doug...I don't blame you for being discouraged. My son didn't receive Foundation or Naps info. Reading your post about a decreasing number of students for 2009 is discouraging. I do know that we have heard there are many Jr officers. His ROTC interviewer said Navy was trimming it's work force by 5% so it would stand to reason that they would do the same at the Academy. Our nephew was let out 3 months early to begin college after enlisting so he would make the start of school....I guess we all wait! Good luck and please post the CVW info. Nothing was said when we went in the fall.

Doug---I'm in the same sistuation, I have an appointment to West Point and KP, but I have accepted the Foundation (which is what I plan to do). But I was told that by Admissions that by accepting the Foundation, I have showed my true desire to USNA so my chances of direct admission or NAPS is greatly increased.

"the academics here at NAPS are more demanding than the academy"

USNAgirl09,

Could you please explain your statement.

Thanks

When I spent a week over at USNA, I stayed with plebes who were prior NAPSters. I asked them how the academics at NAPS compared to the acedemics at the Academy. They told me that as far as their plebe academics went, they were much easier. Now, that could be due to the fact that they had already learned to juggle the academics, military, and athletics. Just about every plebe that I talked to said the same thing.

(I see that the pros never came in so here they are)

pros
- you make $700 a month, so you can save for expenses as a plebe
- you get the chance to lead your peers (I am a company commander this trimester)
- you learn how to live in a military environment
- your time management skills inprove
- you go the Academy with about 250 people that you already know
- you have already said good bye to your family and friends, so during plebe summer you wont be so home sick and depressed

hope that this helps
ashley

I have completed my application several months ago, and only received my congressional nomination about a month ago. I have yet to hear anything from the academy, should I call or email the academy or my BGO, or just wait for the mail to come? I keep reading everyone here saying how they heard back they they are being considered for NAPS, or got accepted, yet I have not heard anything. So I was just wondering what you think I should do.

Thanks

I would call your BGO - he might be able to check your status. At the very least he will know of your continued interest in the academy.
