Confused About Acceptances

I had no idea what to title this, but here goes.
I study at a high school where, a few years back, a lot of people got into NYU but only one of them decided to go there. Since then NYU rarely accepted students from my school, but this year, FIVE people got into NYU.
At least three of them into Stern, I believe.
and I'm pretty sure one of them has a 3.0 GPA (if not a bit lower) and he got into Stern.

I'm a bit confused tbh. How?!
Though it does give me a bit of hope since my GPA is nowhere near a 3.6, which is what NYU usually demands, and it's my dream school.
I'm really glad for these people since they're my friends, but I'm in shock. A good kind of shock, but still. I'm confused.

Usually, NYU accepts like 1-2 people from my school---- this year they accepted like 10!

They are very unpredictable…

Same here! I thought it was 5, but I checked and they actually accepted 9.
I was so surprised.

Well they may have a major hook. One of my friends just got into USC with a 1790 on his SAT because he knew the admissions director. You never know.
