Im kind of confused about the admissions process at UT. Do they really have a law that if you get in top 10 percent your in? Looking through the past posts I've seen statements that contradict each other about it being hard to get in out of state. What's the case? I live in Illinois, 31 ACT, 4.55 GPA, class rank n/a, but Im probably somewhere in the top 2-4%. I want to major in accounting so I would be applying to Mccombs. Looking at some stats of the school it seems like Im a lock. But after reading about admissions and difficulty of getting into Mccombs, am I? BTW I have avg. ECs. 2 yrs football and baseball 2 yrs varsity track

Top 10% law applies to Texas residents, not out-of-state residents.

benh is right, top 10% applies to Texas residents who graduate from a public high school. But with your stats, i’d say you have a very good shot.

McCombs bases their admissions largely on rank. Top 2 pecent should get you in, top 4% probably won’t. It’s that picky.

Do you have strong leadership on your ECs? Are you a strong writer? For admission to UT on the whole, these factors weigh heavily, as do class rank and SAT/ACT. Your ACT is good, but remember that UT only uses the English and Math sections to determine your ACT score, so if Science and Reading are boosting your grade you might want to try the exam again. Why they use only those two sections, I don’t know.

I think you are a very good shot to get in to UT with just your academic stats, but stranger things have happened. I don’t know about McCombs–it really depends on where you rank. If your school doesn’t release an official rank, technically they estimate one for you. I don’t know their methodology for that–I don’t think they’ve released that data.
