Admissions Question

Hey guys, I'm really interested in going to UT to the McComb's School of Business.

I'm currently top 5% of 700+ students, got a 1070 on my SAT (I KNOW it's horrible, 630 Math 440 Critical Reading, and 550 Writing) I got a 1620 total. It was really bad because I had barely slept the night before, and after every section they made us stand outside without A/C for 5-10 minutes and I had no calculator, it really sucked... I know I can do way better. My GPA is 98.96 out of 100, and the only extra curricular activies I did were Orchestra in Middle School (Probably doesn't count), and 2 years of Tennis in High School.

I really want to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, business seems like the best major all around. And I really love UT, the campus life, and help on campus, and TONS of clubs to join, it seems like it's the school for me... But I don't want to pursue any other major besides one in Business (Maybe accounting or finance).

Apparently McComb's only cares about rank and mainly takes top 1% and 2%, which has really started to make me doubt my chances. And also I took the SAT Junior year, and was unaware of the December deadline for UT... I know I can do a lot better and I'm going to do standby testing for ACT and SAT.

What score should I am for? About 1300 minimum on SAT? 29 ACT? I'm going for the highest but these seem like above average, considerable scores.

Also should I risk it if I don't get in and go to UT anyways and try to get into McComb's after basics?

I need advice please help me out guys! Oh and if you didn't realize it, I'm currently a senior lol.

Thank you! :)

I don’t have enough experience with McCombs to advise you on that, but seeing as how you qualify for guaranteed admission with the top 10% rule, I’d say get in your application now and then try to transfer into McCombs after you’re already at UT. I’ve heard that generally changing majors/departments once within UT is fairly easy, but I’m not sure how that applies to McCombs.

I would try to stay standby and take the SATs again to bring your scores up, as you have suggested. The writing and reading are pretty dismal, as you’ve pointed out, and they seem to be out of character considering your rank and GPA.

Yeah I know, I was half asleep and out in the sun 20% of the time… hope it’s not like that again I know I can score atleast 1300, and 29+ on ACT :D

Thrasher, no school should make you stand outside in the sun between sections. That’s just weird. Maybe you should consider requesting a different testing location next time…even if it means a longer drive.
