Confused about ENGAGE

I know that they only accept ten students, which is close to nothing. I applied and everything... but what if I don't get it? Does it get easier to get in once I am a freshman at Vandy (want to apply to Owen)?

Also, they say they contact you in March... is this regardless of acceptance or not, or only if you are accepted? If they contact me about ENGAGE is it safe to assume that I have been accepte to Vanderbilt, or not?

I wish I could answer but I don't know. I have been invited to apply to ENGAGE too (I didn't apply) but I don't think it means I'm accepted.

I don't know what you mean you've been "invited" to apply to ENGAGE. You got a brochure in the mail, cuz that's nothing.

norms39, your questions are pretty easy, so I hope this will clear things up for you: ENGAGE is harder to get into than the actual Vandy grad school. The will contact you even if you are denied. If you are accepted to ENGAGE, that means you are accepted to Vanderbilt. They will notify you of your ENGAGE acceptance at the same time or after they send you your undergrad acceptance -- i'm not sure which. In any case, you're not going to hear about ENGAGE before you hear about your undergrad acceptance

I have some questions of my own:
what is the distribution of ENGAGE acceptance among the different grad schools?
What was your topic for the current issue essay (I just want some ideas), and how long was it?

just curious about your opinion, if you get into ENGAGE, are you definitely going to Vanderbilt?

I'm not sure about distribution.... in another thread it looked to be a lot of people to the medical school. For the essay, I wrote about climate change because I had already studied it for Spanish class and had written another college essay for it, so I knew what I was talking about and I applied it to business.
If I were accepted to ENGAGE, it would definitely make me consider Vanderbilt much more. But, I would still weigh my options. I am applying Preferred Admittance to Michigan's B School also and money is also a factor.

From the ENGAGE website, my understanding was that they would contact us about our ENGAGE status in March. But we don't hear back about admission until April 1. Maybe you're correct and I just read it wrong. What I was wondering was, even if I am rejected from ENGAGE, does that mean I'm into Vanderbilt since they were considering me?

The main reason I'm interested is because I'd like to complete an MBA and Bachelor's degree in 5 years (instead of 6) and ENGAGE can help me do so. That's why I don't just want to apply to Owen after graduation.

So I'm still wondering about the competition once a freshman at Vandy

Actually, I'm glad someone mentioned this because I've been curious. Did everyone get an email about ENGAGE? They sent me the email after the admissions office finalized all the ED decisions.. did anyone not get this email? I'm not assuming anything because I know it wasn't a personal email, but I was just thinking to myself that it would be a PR nightmare if they sent that email to kids who were rejected. And the email was also from my admissions counselor, so it was kind of ironic. I'm assuming it's just bad timing. But obviously, I'm anxious as heck right now so it's hard to stop myself from reading into anything - so I'm still asking.

But John, you say that they contact everyone, even people who are denied - are you sure? I'm just wondering why they would do that.. usually rejected kids are taken off the mailing list.

rodia... actually i'm not sure, but I was just using common sense... which definitely could be wrong. But every college i know of sends out "thin envelopes" even if you're rejected. I guess I'm not too worried about his yet, right now I just have to finish my app lol.

the current events essay... does it have to relate to the grad school we are applying to?

The application question doesn't specify, but I definitely think it would strengthen your application if you did relate the current event to your desired grad school.

My daughter also received this email from her admissions counselor last Tuesday. I also wondered if this was some sort of indication of admission.

My son got this email from his admissions counselor, and he's a regular decision applicant (well actually he's withdrawing since he got in elsewhere ED). I doubt they've even read his application, so it's probably a mass mailing.

I know that the "invitation" is a mass mailing. What I was wondering about was AFTER I apply, when they consider me and let me know if I am ENGAGE or not, will this be any indication of my admittance?

Simply because you apply and they consider you for ENGAGE certainly does not guarantee you admission into Vandy undergrad. If you are a finalist in ENGAGE, then its a pretty safe bet that you will be admitted into undergrad, even if you don't become an ENGAGE scholar. So, if you make it pass the initial screening for ENGAGE, then you are clearly a high caliber applicant and should be accepted to the undergraduate school.

Also, you said that money was a factor. Just thought that I would remind you that the ENGAGE scholars program is not an actually scholarship, it is a guaranteed admittance into the graduate school that you apply to and a stipend for research/internship/business related program. For instance, I have chosen to use my stipend to attend Owen's Accelerator program. (Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management : Accelerator)

If you have any specific questions about the program, shoot me a PM and I will try my best to answer them.

When is this "initial screening"? When can we expect to hear more?

This topic has tipped my interest because I also applied for ENGAGE in business.
I really like the idea of attending Vanderbilt because I can receive a full education in almost anything I want. But, only about 10 people are accepted to ENGAGE out of HS. Is it easier to get into after freshman year? Because attending grad school and being finished in 5 years is a big factor in college choice to me.

Also, what is Owen like? It's not really top-ranked but Vanderbilt is and I know rankings really do not speak for themselves. However, I am looking at programs like Georgetown (McDonough) and Penn (Wharton) so I'm wondering how it would stack up. I want to study international business, I think and am concerned that it cannot really happen at Owen.

I mean, Wharton trumps all

I wasn't award you could try out again for ENGAGE as a freshman. That's good to hear. You can essentially apply for med school each year lol. That's 4 tries. Hopefully I can get into med school in 4 tries
