Confused about how signing up for major works

as a freshman, everyone signs up for one or two majors that they want to do.
but i thought this was just to give uw an idea what we want to study in.
doesn't choosing for majors count at junior year? i'm confused about what some people are saying that they get accepted or rejected to their desired major when entering as a freshman. somebody please clarify me about how choosing majors work!

If you know what you want to major in, you submit your application with your major choice. Some programs (SOME) have direct admit, which means that a few high school students automatically get into the major of their choice. It depends on the department and the type of major. For example…
Chemistry - OPEN major. Anyone can declare it, any time. High school students who request a chemistry major AUTOMATICALLY get it.
Biology - MINIMUM requirement. You must fulfill x requirements (taking BIO 1xx <some number) and getting at least a 2.5 or something. Then you apply after you take that class and you get your major.
Computer Science - COMPETITIVE. Usually you have to have taken x classes, fill out an application, etc. 40% of returning UW students even get this major. 25% of high school students are given this major upon admittance into UW. They have a ‘direct admit program’ which is the whole ‘lets take these high school kids because they look like they can do well and want to do this major’

Not all majors have the direct admit program, as I found out with biology (I emailed the admissions office). Even though I took AP Bio, took the AP Test, and Subject II test, passed the AP and did very well on the SAT II, I will enter as a ‘pre-science’ student.

Check individual departments on the website for more information.

i signed up for pre-health science so i can apply to pharmacy later on (pharmacy was not on the list, and i checked that pharmacy was under the pre-health science category) do you have any idea how this pre-major section works?
