Accpetance by Department?

I was just speculating, and I started to wonder: Would I have a better chance of getting in by applying to be a biology major (one of the most popular) or applying as "undecided"? UW is my top choice and I don't want to have narrowed my chances by applying as a biology major. Do I have to be a more competative applicant with better grades and test scores to get into the major I want as opposed to a general acceptance? Thoughts, anyone?

No. Put whatever YOU want to major in.

Admissions goes like this:
General admissions committee looks at your application.
IF you are accepted to UW … yay!
IF you are accepted to UW AND put in an intended major with a direct admit program (like EE), then that department looks at your application for direct admit consideration.

My friend applied with an intended “French” major because he thought it would be easier for him to get into UW … it turns out it doesnt matter, he has “declared” French as his major since it was an open major, and now he’s trying frantically to switch to MechE or something like that.

So, what happens if the general admissions commitee accepts me, but the science department does not think i meet their requirements? Am i waitlisted? Denied?

i’m not sure, and if i’m wrong, someone correct me, but i think you are accepted to attend.

You are accepted to attend.

Even if you aren’t accepted into a department, you can go to UW. Most freshmen come in having no idea what they want to do and without a declared major.
