Confused about IGETC and GE

1.Okay, IGETC contains GE classes, correct?

IGETC needs to be completed to be able to TAG, correct?

IGETC stands for Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum, so yes, IGETC is basically a cluster of general education classes.

Not just for TAG. Basically when you apply to a UC or CSU, they ask you if you will be IGETC certified (completed all of your IGETC classes) by the Spring prior to the semester you’d start.

This is a big deal because if you say that you will be IGETC certified and, let’s say, UCLA accepts you- but you don’t do your math requirement for your IGETC, you WILL get rescinded.

I recommend you talk to your counselor more about it and if possible, that you go into your school’s website and try to find their IGETC checklist (different community colleges have different approved classes).

There are a few caveats…

First, IGETC is not required for admission, though many (all?) TAG agreements do require it. If you choose, you can fulfill the UC’s general education requirements another way. This is often recommended for certain majors–engineering is a common one, but it varies depending on the campus.

What matchcutto says about being rescinded for failing to complete IGETC is true, but only if you said you were IGETC-certified but then actually weren’t.
