Hi,
I have read through the discussion but remain confused about on campus housing for a new freshman. DS was admitted to UT Austin mid February, at which point we paid the $50 to get on the housing list. He has not yet decided which university he will attend because several of his top schools do not notify until late March. Meanwhile, is he missing out on the opportunity to obtain a housing contract for next fall? He is not concerned so much with which dorm/room type he gets as long as he receives an on-campus housing assignment.
Thanks for any guidance.
This explanation of the process has been helpful to me: http://housing.utexas.edu/future/housing-process
My son is also not quite decided on where he is attending. We went ahead and did the $50 housing application fee, the $200 enrollment deposit, and the $300 housing deposit, so that he’ll have a good chance at housing. If he decides before May 1 not to attend UT, the $200 and $300 deposits will be refunded to us.
This is useful link. If you keep following links you will find: Room Selection timeslots are assigned in housing application date order, not in the order housing preferences were submitted, so updating your housing preferences never hinders you.

Which means you don’t have to do contract/enroll for slot, but you do need to do the $50 Housing Application.
Thanks for your replies. I called the admissions office on Friday, and was told that his place on the housing queue is maintained as long as he enrolls by May 1.
