Confused...Did I Screw Up?

<p>Ok, so I applied to the Media Production major at FSU. Since acceptances come out Wednesday, I figured I’d look at the sight again, just for kicks. So I clicked on it, and by chance clicked on Admissions.</p>

<p>Here’s where the bad stuff happens: I click on it and see the following</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>First off, somehow I managed to miss this, and miss the fact that only 40 undergrads are accepted :(</p>

<p>So, I’m pretty angry at myself right now, but then I’m reading the Admissions PDF, and it sounds like all this stuff I’m mad about is for transfers. So here are my questions:</p>

<li>Was there some seperate Dept. of Communication app that I missed?</li>
<li>Is this stuff I’m mentioning for Freshman applicants or transfers?</li>
</ol>

<p>thanks in advance. I’m so scared cuz if I had seen that, I would’ve have sent recs and a DVD. :(</p>

<p>I believe that the communications majors are limited access majors, and you don't apply for it until you are a sophomore. ( or sophomore standing with AP/IB/DE credits).... but someone else will jump in and tell for sure. You are not officially a communications major until you are a junior (again credit wise), and only if accepted into the program. </p>

<p>I believe you have to complete gen ed requirements and prerequisites to apply. After enrolled at FSU and meeting requirements you formally apply for the major, and you are up against those applying already at FSU and those who qualify to apply as transfers. But with the cap in enrollment, I think they are accepting less from out of FSU than in years previous.<br>

Admission Requirements to Major Program of Studies:
The Department of Communication is a limited access program, restricted by both total numbers of students in each major and minimum grade point average required for application. Each major operates with a different enrollment cap. Achievement of the minimum application GPA does not guarantee admission to a communication major; all admissions are competitive. Admission criteria are available from the Department. An application form must be completed and submitted to the Department of Communication. Minimum requirements for review of application include: an overall GPA of 3.0 on all college coursework attempted; completed application form submitted to the Department of Communication on or before the first business day in February for each year; and transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Students must provide proof that they have passed or been exempted from CLAST before applying and must have completed 43 hours of college coursework at the end of the semester of application. Applicants are encouraged to enroll in a foreign language, computing statistics, speaking, and writing courses. Acceptance by a faculty committee will be based on a review of the application and transcript, and other relevant materials in light of the published admissions criteria. By the end of the spring semester in which the student is applying for admission, the AA Degree or all remaining Liberal Studies and Gordon Rule requirements must be completed. If your AA is pending at the time of application, you must provide proof that you are on the spring graduation list.

<p>This thread below talked about how competitive it is to gain access to communications at FSU.
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/florida-state-university/308863-so-sad-rejected-communication-dept.html?highlight=communication+major%5B/url%5D"&gt;http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/florida-state-university/308863-so-sad-rejected-communication-dept.html?highlight=communication+major&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p>

<p>When applying for competitive majors I would strongly advise you to personally contact that department and ensure you are applying correctly. Secondly, you should always assume you need to scour the FSU website for all related information and caveats.</p>

<p>Take no chances...spend the time and know what you are doing at all times - especially with competitive majors.</p>

<p>In a major state university like Florida State the competition is more intense than you may first realize. Many times, especially on this website, this competitive intensity at FSU is severly understated. As a graduate of Florida State I can personally attest to students not achieving desired goals as they flubbed or were put-off by the application process, even though they were in reality competitive. There will likely not be someone, unless you form those relationships with faculty and advisors and become your own advocate, to seek you out and guide you. </p>

<p>It is a meritocracy, many times intensely so. Persistance, study, and reasonable risk taking are essential to success. Further, these skills will serve you well later in life.</p>

<p>Alright thanks.</p>

<p>I guess that leads to my main question:</p>

<p>Will forgetting this stuff (which apparently is for people already in FSU & not freshman) cause me to not be admitted?</p>

<p>rsxwheeeeee, I am not sure what your main question still is. If you are a FTIC (first time in college) freshman with no other college credits other than AP/DE/IB then you are not applying to the College of Communications, you are simply applying to FSU. You didn't "forget stuff," IT DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU. </p>

<p>If you are applying as a transfer, you will not be considered for the College of Communications. </p>

<p>I would check out the info in the FSU website about limited access majors. They are NOT OPEN TO EVERYONE, they are very competitive, and they are not open to apply as freshman.</p>

Limited Access Majors
Some majors require you to apply and be admitted into that specific program. Most of these programs admit students during the sophomore year to begin the major the following fall. Music, Film, and the BFA programs in Theatre and Dance admit students as freshmen. Limited access programs at FSU include Business, Communication, Communication Disorders, Computer Science, Dance, Economics, Education, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Music, Nursing, Psychology, Studio Art, and Theatre. You will learn more about admission policies and procedures at Orientation or you may wish to visit the department homepages for information about admission into these programs. For a complete list of these majors, select Limited Access.

Limited Access Programs</p>

<p>A limited access program utilizes selective admission to limit program enrollment. Limited access status is justified where student demand exceeds available resources (student/faculty ratios, instructional facilities, equipment, or specific accrediting requirements). Criteria for selective admission include indicators of ability, performance, creativity, or talent to complete required work within the program. Admission to such programs is governed by the Articulation Agreement and by the State Board of Education administrative rules.</p>

<p>For a number of degree programs, access is limited at the upper-division level to those students meeting certain additional criteria. These additional criteria are applied equally to AA degree transfers from Florida public community/junior colleges, AA degree transfers from other state universities in Florida, and rising juniors at Florida State University.</p>

<p>Limited access programs are offered by a number of different colleges. For specific requirements for admission to a particular department or college, refer to the appropriate section of this General Bulletin.

<p>that's what i was looking for, thanks :D</p>

<p>Do not think that list has the only competitive majors at Florida State. Assume all are competitive; though some may be specifically articulated as such in the General</a> Bulletin.</p>
