When filling out the common app, you get to the essay part. Once you complete this (short answer and upload the essay of your choice), will all the colleges you send it to receive that essay and short answer? Will an individual college tell you if they want a separate, or another, essay? Help clarify all you know on the essay part because I'm confused. Thank you!

You are exactly correct. Once you complete the essays (the EC essay and personal statement) you send it off to every college on your list.

Then, you are asked to submit a supplemental application to most colleges (some don’t require this). Those that do tend to ask for at least 1 more essay. So, you write them a personal essay on the topic of their choice (most of the time).

So do not personalize the personal statement or the EC for any college in any way. You will have a chance to do that on the supplement!
