Confused over low ACT english score...

So after checking my ACT score today, I was fine with what I received in all of my sections except English, in which I got a 26. Honestly, I'm completely shocked by how poorly I did in this section, considering I was scoring 71-75/75 on all of my practice tests before the actual ACT (took the practice tests from Princeton Review 1296 questions + Red Book). Even more, I felt like I missed only 2-3 in English after I took the actual test...

Should I get my test regraded? I really wanted to get at least a composite score of 30, but I got a 29 because of my low English score...

Here's what I got in all of my sections:

C: 29
E: 26
M: 33
R: 31
S: 27

I don’t get the reading section of the act at all I ended up with a 26 on my first attempt. It is sad. I did okay in all the other sections.

E-25
M-28
R-21
S-28

To both of you, I received a 32 on English and a 31 on Reading.

For the English section, I felt that the questions were harder on the test than in the red book. I don’t know what grade you’re in, but if you’re a junior just study for it again and you should do better.

As for critical reading. I really practiced timing myself. You get a little less than eight minutes per passage. Also practice taking the sections using different strategies until you find a good one for you!

Unfortunately I’m a senior so this ACT was the last one I was able to take. I’m worried over how much that English score is going to hurt me…considering I’ve only taken the ACT once. (My SAT score is about the same as this score)

I’m primarily applying to UCs and Cal Poly. If I have a 4.56 gpa (3.96 unweighted) and two SAT 2 subject scores that are both 740 (Math 2 and Bio M) and I’m applying under engineering in UCLA, (applying under Computer Science BA in Berkeley) do you think I’ll be fine?

First time I took the ACT (I’m a sophomore) and I got a 35 on English.

I didn’t find the section difficult at all. There were a few I had to think about for more than usual, but that’s it.

The red book was excellent practice. I was getting 36s consistently on the English section…you just need a solid idea of basic grammar/sentence structure. You don’t need to go through the whole passage, just read each question and the sentence that it contains. You should get a perfectly good idea of the answer just from that. And there are questions in each paragraph, so even if it asks you a general question, you’ll be able to deduce the answer.

Also, I think you’ll be fine for CompSci–your math score is high enough. They do look at individual section scores as well.

You sound like you have a great academic profile! You’ll get into at least one, not to worry!

that was the first time that I took it and I did better on the english section at home. I took one test from the red book and got a 29 on the section. on test day i got a 25. how could that happen? I timed myself at home by the way.

Keep taking practice tests. I tend to do just the sections I need to work on

I earned 35-36 on my practice english tests. On ACT day, I scored a 32 first time and a 31 my second. Comes to show how stupid these tests can be. (same for math… I would sometimes score 29 on practice, but on ACT day, I scored a 34)

Yeah I was scoring in the 31-34 range on English practice tests…but then I got a 26 on actual test day. So frustrating :/

I think the curve ended up working against us. But it was definitely a harder section than it usually is. English is the one section I consistently finish (usually with an extra twenty minutes), but I didn’t finish this time around. Also my proctor was on the phone. So that probably didn’t help either. With all that in mind, I’m really not too upset with a 30 on English. It was my first time though. I’m re-taking it in February and they granted me extended time for this one. So it should be better. As in I should finish.

I can’t believe that your proctor was on the phone. Isn’t that against the rules?

I’m pretty sure it is… but she was all like, “I need my phone on because I’m using it to time.” She wasn’t on the phone for a really long time or anything, but it did keep ringing and she kept picking it up and saying something along the lines of, “Oh, Hi!!! I can’t really talk to you right now. I’m kinda in the middle of proctoring an ACT. I’ll call you back later.” But she did talk during the test and I couldn’t figure out to whom. It was like she was talking to no one. And she ate a salad. And a sandwich. And chips with guacamole. She actually brought guacamole with her to an ACT. If it wasn’t me taking a test to get into college it would have been comical. And I had to remind her to give us a break. She didn’t know we were supposed to have one. And she almost made the non-writing kids stay for writing, because she forgot to let them go. And she forgot to tell us to start on the science section. As in we were sitting there, waiting, and she had already started timing us. Overall she didn’t really know what she was doing and it was a pretty bad experience. Hopefully next time my proctor won’t be as bad. Sorry if that was kinda ranty, it was just really, really bad.

samcmanus,

Have you thought of filing a complaint?

What happened was completely unbelievable and unacceptable.

i’d get it regraded, cant hurt.

sorry about your experience, please report her so she doesn’t mess up future test takers.
