okay....so I'm trying to head for haas business school, and I looked at their application and they want a calculus course.....(1A, 1B, 16A, 16B) ....and so I was wondering if I got a 5 on the CALC BC exam ...(ill find out in july) ....would it be good to take math 53? or retake 1B? or just dont even take math in berkeley?
thanks

If you get a 5 on the BC exam, then you can safely skip the 1ab sequence, and take math 53/54. In fact, you probably want to avoid math 1b... at Berkeley, math 1b has a reputation for being much harder than 53/54. As for whether you should take any more math at all, well that really depends on what kind of business interests you... some aspects can be quite mathematical, and having linear algebra (matrices, etc) and vector calculus might be useful for advanced study.

oh ok .........

Can you take 1b at a summer school, and then 1a at berkeley?

WHY would you take 1b BEFORE 1a?

What about Mech Engineering majors?
Any reccomendations for classes for this? Which professors and stuff.

Pre-Med, I was planning to take 1b over the summer and take 1a at Berkeley. I was advised that it isn't very smart to use AP credit to bypass 1a. So can you take 1b before 1a?

it's stupid to take 1b before 1a because you don't know the material that you were supposed to have learned in 1a!!

Well, here are my thoughts: if you did well on the AP exams, then you'll have the necessary background to take Math1B. So in that way, it is feasible to take Math1B before taking Math1A. But here's a caveat: Math1A and 1B are much different beasts than the AP Calc AB and BC classes. Consequently, you'll probably have a much easier time in Math1B if your foundation consists of Math1A as opposed to high school calculus.

If you can get a good grade in Math1B (and you've taken the AP courses to obviate Math1A), there's really no need to take 1A at all. Why eat up units when you could be taking more interesting courses? So ultimately, taking 1B before 1A is generally inadvisable.

ajitsmannan,

Whoever advised you gave you very HORRIBLE advice.
Why would it not be "very smart to use AP credit to bypass 1a"?
That doesn't make any freakin' sense. Out of all the APs, calculus is the one that is MOST aligned with college curricula.
If you do well on the BC exam, you can confidently skip math 1ab,
and start with math 53/54. By the way, math 53/54 CAN be taken in either order because they are independent courses that are fairly unrelated...

Also a warning: I don't know about Berkeley, but some universities have EXPLICIT rules that prevent you from earning credit for a lower level course in a sequence if you have already passed the advanced course in the sequence. So before you ever try such a thing (which you shouldn't) you MUST check with the department that they would give you credit.

I am planning to apply for medical schools, at the orientation they said that it isn't advisable to use AP credit to opt out of required classes. I only took AP Calc AB not BC.

But the question remains, can I take 1a at Berkeley after taking 1b at a local CC?

ajitsmannan,

That is probably true for chemistry and bio, but NOT for math.
As I said before, out of all the AP exams, Calculus is the one that is most like the actual college classes... and skipping math 1a is VERY, VERY common, even for pre-meds.

My advice (take it with a grain of salt): If you get a 5 on Calc AB, then go ahead and skip 1a... but if you get a 4, you may or may not want to retake 1a, depending on how confident you feel about the material.

As for taking 1b at a community college:
if you want to transfer that credit over to Berkeley, then no, you won't be able to then take math 1a after... but if you are taking math 1b at a CC just to get a preview, and then retake both 1a AND 1b at Berkeley, that would be OK... the problem is when you take a more advanced course for credit, and then try to take a lower course for credit.

Of course, you should check any advice you get here with actual advisors at Berkeley.

Hahaha I have absolutely no idea what I'm taking. That Drugs and the Brain course sounds interesting, and I'll probably take a seminar, but I don't even know what I'm up to in terms of a major - at least you know that.

Egyptology? Mathematics? English? w/e, could be anything except French.

It would really be awesome if I got a 5 on the Lit I took this month, though. That would get me out of the second half of R & C...

When do we choose classes anyway?

You sign up at CalSO.
