ok, I Know that at Rice you can double major between schools but I'm confused about what to do when filling out the application. I want to double major in Poly Sci and Vocal Performance (Bass/Baritone) but I don't know whether I should put the Shepherd School or the school of social sciences. I know that on the common application you can put other for possible major and then explain what that means, so can I just do other and tell them both majors. Also, in the section where you write the specific college that your applying to can you just put both down?....I'm so confused! One quick question, is it like complete application suicide to use the common app to applyt Rice?

I know I'm cramming a ton into this post but any thoughts on my chances would be appreciated..

One thing that was told to me when I said I wanted to double major in music and something else was, "Technically, you can do that, but don't."

As the former roommate of a Shepherd School performance major, I can say for sure that the curriculum at Shepherd is intense. The courses that a music major must take really don't overlap with any other major, even partially, and keeping up with ensemble requirements and daily practice regimens, it'll be difficult to pursue an entirely different degree at the same time.

That being said... If you have any desire to pursue a music performance degree, put down that you want to apply to the Shepherd School of Music to be a performance major. Shepherd students first have to get into Rice, and then must get into the music school. In other words, a Shepherd student can add another Rice non-music major, hypothetically, but a non-Shepherd Rice student must still audition and separately apply to get into Shepherd, even once they're in Rice.

A freshmen musi I know is also pre-med. I know that that isn't the same thing as being a double major, but it is equally as hard if not more hard because she has to keep up such a high gpa in all her classes for med school. She is taking 22 credit hours this semester. I don't see her very much for obvious reasons. Most musi's will tell you not to do something like take up another major or become premed because it is so hard to do both of the two and stay sane. I think some classes might overlap depending on your musi concentration. I know a voice major who might be a ling major because he has to take a couple of different ling classes and a couple of different language courses. I don't really know all the details, but I just wanted to throw that in there.

Oof... Notice she's still a freshman. If I were a bettin' girl, I'd have to say that the odds are against your friend for graduating with a BMus and getting all her pre-med requirements in, but it'd still be easier than doing a double major.
