Colleges at Rice (Question)

Most universities have a college of Arts and Sciences, but Rice seems to have separate colleges for Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. On the supplement it says to apply to only one of those schools, but I may want to double major with a concentration from two different schools (i.e. humanities and social sciences). Would that be possible?

That's fine...just apply to one of the divisions...the divisions reallly aren't restrictive. You can double major easily. The only divisions in Rice undergrad that require special permission are architecture and music, so you're fine.

okay, that makes me feel a little better. Thanks a lot.

If I'm planning on auditioning for the Shepherd School of Music and double-majoring with the humanities, am I supposed to mark the music school box or does it matter? Also, I've heard that Shepherd students are pushed to pursue professional music careers. Is that true? I'm interested in studying violin but not for a career.

Apply to the school of music if that is what you really want to study. This is posted on Rice's website:

"Enrolled students do not declare a major until the end of sophomore year. You may declare a major in any of Rice’s divisions of study regardless of your stated division of study at the time of admission. And you may change your major or division at any time. In fact, many students double major across academic divisions and still graduate in four years. The exception to the rule is Music and Architecture – you must be admitted to the Music or Architecture divisions either as an entering student or as a current Rice student who applies and is accepted for the major."

I don't believe that there is immense pressure at Shepherd for music majors to become professionals. However, the intent of the music curriculum IS for a career in performance after graduation.

A music major at Rice is not for the casual musician; be prepared to put in a lot of time and effort. The jokes around campus often refer to the amount of time an Archi spends in studio or a Musi spends practicing in the halls at Shepherd.

I wasn't a Musi, so I can't tell you how much trouble it would be double majoring... but at Rice, anything's possible.
