Confusion about Gap Year

hi, everyone.

okay, so i’m confused about how to list my gap year on the common application. the statement is “Please indicate if any of these options will have affected your progression through or since secondary school. Check all that apply.” i checked “did or will take gap year” (since it says SINCE secondary school), but it’s telling me the education part of my application is incomplete. i tried checked the “no change in progression” option as well, but it’s still telling me my application is incomplete. am i supposed to check anything at all?

also, to make me even more confused, it says “Please use the space below to provide details about the change in progression THROUGH secondary school that you indicated above.” but… my gap year came AFTER my high school career?

I’m not sure of the details but I think you are overthinking this. I believe “did or will take gap year” is meant to include taking a gap year between HS graduation and entering college and you should fill in the details. If the details are unsure at this point, put something in that field.

There’s also the possibility that it’s something completely different that is triggering the “incomplete” warning. Have you scrolled through everything? Most online forms will highlight or otherwise flag the missing or wrong entry but sometimes you have to look through everything to find one red-highlighted box or something similar.

A third thought is that some online forms get confused by changes made and don’t give up on whatever you first entered. Exiting and logging in again can clear the slate.

@alooknac hmmm… I may be over thinking it, I’m not sure. I was just confused because it says “through or since secondary school” in the question, but then it says “through secondary school” above the box in which I’m supposed to put my explanation. I guess I’ll check both “Did or will take gap year” and “No change in progression” and state that the gap year was after my senior year.
