According to both the internet and my college book, Tulane is the harder school to get into. And yet in my school everyone uses Tulane as a safety (granted I come from a wealthy community, and the people using it as a safety are the ones applying to Ivys.) However if I ask around people always say I should choose Bucknell over Tulane? Why is that? I'm big on art and have good grades so it seems like Tulane is the better fit, yet people in my area look down on it. Is there a reason? Thanks in advance!

Where are you from? It is probably just local familiarity more than anything else. While Tulane has a significant number of students from the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic area, that is obviously still a very small number of people compared to the overall population.

Go with your gut. And your research. Popular opinion is usually fairly crappy, as we see all too often. BTW, check out the glass studio course at Tulane if you haven’t already.
Besides, when it comes to art and artistic expression, how can one even compare Lewisburg to New Orleans?

What other kids at your school do doesn’t mean anything. It sounds like Tulane makes sense for you, and Bucknell is not a fit. That is all that matters.

Like Hanna says, you’ve done the research. How many of these people who look down on Tulane actually have any experience with Tulane? How many of them have actually done the research you have done?

Bucknell >>>>>>>>> Tulane

If I had the choice, I’d pick Tulane (they are comparable schools, so I would just pick the one that you like more/financially better).

Look what happened to the Big East once Tulane was invited to join. The private academic schools flipped out because it lowered the brand due to its reputation. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Yeah, DePaul, St. Johns, Marquette, Providence College and Seton Hall are worried about Tulane diluting their academic reputation. They’re flipping out over crummy Tulane basketball.

Picked Tulane over Bucknell but Bucknell was 2nd choice

Tulane and . Bucknell are comparable-maybe Bucknell has better name recognition in the northeast. Bucknell is in the Patriot League. Colgate and Holy Cross are 2 of the better academic schools in the Patriot League with Bucknell not far behind.

where do you live that tulane is a safety hahaha tulane is just as good as bucknell in every way. visit both schools and which ever one you like better you should go with.

Please. [10 char]

I live in the Northeast too and Tulane is not really taken seriously, while Bucknell is (by a fair margin). However, as people have said, this reputation is mostly meaningless. Yes, Tulane is many people’s safety school because it gives good merit aid.

Bucknell is associated with Lehigh, Holy Cross, and Colgate. Tulane is associated with being a safety school. It gets a bad rep because of this.

I don’t think you quite understand what a safety school is, Anchser. A safety school is 1. a school that is relatively easy to gain admission to, and 2. also serves as a financial safety if finances are a concern. Just because Tulane is generous with merit aid doesn’t not mean it can be generalized as a safety. The school costs 60k a year! Nor is it any easier to get accepted than at Bucknell.

Chelaeyr, Bucknell and Tulane are worlds apart and what it really boils down to is affordability and fit. Choose whatever school YOU like best.

With “relatively” being the key word. Many people applying to top schools also apply there as a safety because it is RELATIVELY easy to gain admission to, and gives out great merit aid. For a school of its caliber, it is one of the most generous in the entire country. Obviously the OP (and myself) are referring to people who apply to elite schools in the northeast, and are not suggesting that Tulane is a safety for most of the US.

I’m not sure how you can classify a school as a safety or not, unless you are talking about a specific demographic (which the OP already mentioned). That is what we are referring to.
