CONGRATS ED! Current Cornellian- Ask QUESTIONS!

hey i'm a current biological sciences major in CALS and can answer anyone's questions about that too!

alright Cornelli2008 I'll take you up on that.
what's the best part about biological sciences at CALS?
AND are there any downsides/disappointing things?

I'm going to be in the ILR school next year. I know that sometimes the students refer to ILR as the "I love to read" school... how much reading are we talking about here?

Is there an orientation specifically for international students before the semester starts? Are the Cornell Days in April the only time when Cornell invites incoming freshmen to visit the campus?

Helenrez, I'm a current freshman in ILR, and I have to say that you will read a lot. However, the amount you will read is comparable to that of any other major (at least from what I can tell from my PAM and pre-med friends).

Labor History this semester for me had the most to read.

Congrats on getting into Cornell!

mal3889: there is an international orientation called Prepare...I think its like 4-5 days before regular orientation in august, so you basically get like 2+ weeks of orienting to cornell/ithaca/usa/whatever. Also, Cornell Days is pretty much the only time when lots and lots of prospies are invited to campus. There are sporadic special hosting programs, but you find out about those through your college and those are usually at the same time as Cornell Days anyway.

Does Cornell send many undergrads to Law school? Is it difficult to maintain a high GPA?

You can def get to law school w/ a high gpa and if u try hard u can do it.

ILR is definitely a lot of reading. Labor history: "I decided to take it easy on u guys for this year and you will only read around 200 pages a week" ...of labor history. lol o man. W/e tho that was def a good class. Don't worry tho it's all very manageable and all of the teachers want you to do well.

One more question~~ Are we able to take courses in other colleges @ Cornell too???

it is hard to get As at cornell, but it can be done. but dont be surprised if you went from a 4.0 in high school to getting Bs. its just really hard

yeah ILR is a big feeder for law school.

ZIXIF- of course you can take courses at other colleges at Cornell, that's the best part. take a fun hotel cooking class or an architecture class or some crazy engineering class if you want. the options are endless.

cs09: it is almost impossible for non architects to get into arch courses because of the limited enrollment. they have 60 spots for the 60 architects, and thats it. other students have to go through a lot of obstacles and everything to try to get in

very very true laurastar07, my bad on that one

Since they only have 60 spots for the 60 arch kids, does that mean we're stuck with whatever schedule they give us? For example, if they assigned us to go to class at 8 a.m. we really don't have any alternatives? And therefore, I'm not choosing classes, classes choose me?

what are some classes you guys reccomend taking as a freshman?

Feemzi2, it depends on what school you're in. Sometimes classes are pre-picked for you. If given the option I would recommend taking youre pre-requisited and required classes early on and start getting them out of the way.

ya... im in CoE.. so i'm sure i will be taking "some engineering class" =]

arch courses sound fun! oh well~ im sure there are other amazing courses! ahhh this gets me so excited! thank you so much for the info~

when does school start? well, i was planning on traveling and was thinking about booking my tickets now ^^ but then there are these orientations and stuff like that.... i guess i should be in the States for August...

hi, i got in to my alternative choice CoE bioengineering (my first choice was biochemistry at CALS)

Although I am passionate about both subjects, if I feel that bioengineering is not right for me, would it be easy to transfer to CAS biochemistry?

m24flo: yea, pretty much. except that core classes start for us at 1230 and end at 430 everyday. so your electives and fws and gym have to be scheduled earlier. NEVER do a class before 9 am. you wont be able to get up

niceshrp: it shouldn't be too hard as long as you get good grades your first semester. Talk to your advisor right away about your intention to transfer.
