CONGRATS ED! Current Cornellian- Ask QUESTIONS!

Did anyone get their financial aid yet? Or does anyone know when it should be coming in.

nothing wrong with classes before 9. just get an alarm clock >.> if your the type who likes to reach and turn it off, put ur alarm clock across the room. and if they sections just skip it.

Does Cornell grade on a curve or is it based on what you actually score on each test? Does it depend on the professor? If so, how is your grade determined in most ILR classes

depends on class. weed out classes especially grade on curve (bio, chem, bio lab). those are based on ranking. others are test scores, above xx.x is A, below is A- and more below is B+ stuff like that. i think ilr is test scores but im not too sure

I heard there are some intro courses which are used to weed people out. Which courses would you recommend that I take as opposed to using my AP Credit?

depends on ur major what classes you have what ap you got and how good you are but for the popular ones..

SKIP BIOOOOOO, you get 8 CREDIT!! 8!!!!!! bio lecture is 100% USELESS. Bio lab is plain hard so skip that with credit also. I didn't take the AP exam only because people, including cornell interviewers, say retaking bio is highly recommended. dumbest mistake of my life.

Dont skip chemistry as a 5 skips 1 semester only.. and cornell chem is pretty different from AP material chem (for me at least and i got 5 on ap)

Dont skip calculus - upper levels still needs lower lvl calculus, so you should refresh yourself of forgotten calculus, Skip it if you are 100% confident of your abilities, skip it if you are merely satisfying a requirement. Im pre med and i used my credit so i dont have to take it as im not taking math again other than stat.

Dont skip ECON 101/102 unless to satisfy requirement for social science. They are easy classes i heard, grade boosters. But i used my credit anyway cause they bore me to death. Upper econ lvls are much harder and are way more numerical (lotssssss of math)

Dont use psych, class is worth taking

USE ENGLISH!!!!, skip out FWS unless u seriously love writing. I HATED IT, it ruined my GPA and it was more work than Bio 101 + chem 207 combined with tons of essay and reading. (depends on your FWS)

Do freshmen get to pick what dorm they want to be in? I read that it is random assignment unless you want to be in Balch or a Towhouse, but if thats so, how can there be a social dorm (Donlon)? Wouldn't the social kids just be randomly dispersed?

Also, AnbuItachi -- Is it alright to skip bio (with a 5 on the AP) if i want to do premed?

house application you get to choose, quiet, loud, night owl, early bird
i landed in Donlon (worst place ever) when i picked quiet + early bird so i dont know how it works. you get to choose program houses and townhouse (the best). townhouses are very quiet, theres 2 floors for 4 kids with own kitchen bathroom, shower, living room, dining room..

check with med school that you want to apply for. i heard there are a few out there that dont want AP credit.

you can also be randomly assigned to Balch (if youre a girl, obviously) or a Townhouse...even to a program house! one of my friends (who happens to be korean) landed a spot in the latino living center. mostly people who ask for singles end up in dickson, which is the biggest dorm and social too (since it is like 90% singles)

if you want to double major in english and math, would it be detrimental to apply to a state school? Are you only allowed a certain number of classes to take in different schools? Can you double major across schools?

also, is it difficult to transfer from school to school (if you apply to one but want to switch around soph or junior yr?)

it isnt difficult, just a hassle.

i dont think you can double major across schools, but luckily for you, A&S has both english and math, and apply to some state schools. it wont ever hurt

they encourage you to take classes at other colleges

thanks for the advice :)

Are there any dorms that I should avoid? Aren't townhouses supposed to be really far away from the rest of the buildings? Are they so far away that it is really inconvenient to walk to my classes or is it just mildly annoying? Also what is a program house?

Would living in a single versus having a roomate make you less sociable? Obviously you will make friends regardless of where you live but is it easier when you're in an active dorm with a bunch of people versus in a room by yourself?

I wouldn't think living in a single makes you any less sociable. I've had a single the last two years here (one in Balch and one in JAM) and I've been able to still make some really good friends. I generally keep my door open when I'm working or when I'm in my room so that people can pop in to say hi or come and talk whenever they want.

Townhouses are pretty far, but the Ecology House is farther. It's not that bad of a walk when it's warm or dry out, but I know last year during one of the snowstorms, it was just a pain to get home to Balch. A program house is a place where people are housed by their interest/hobby. The popular ones are Risley, Ujamaa, JAM, Akwekon, HILC and Ecology House on North and the Language Houses on West. They're open for everyone so if you live in a double or triple, your roommate might be a soph, junior or senior. I believe, generally, they do try pairing freshmen with either freshmen or sophomores, but that really depends on what's open. Last year, a lot of sophomores ended up in program houses without wanting to because upperclassmen were allowed to homestead and a lot more people did than expected.

couple ofquestions: any ilr'ies get involved in the cornell daily sun or is that more of an arts and sciences thing? And are there inter school rivarlies?...in other words are some schools looked down upon as academically easier or worse or is there pretty much university wide unity?

great questions ^^^

I'd also like to know about the difficulty of freshman getting involved w/ the daily sun?

bump.......
