Congratulation to the PU Class 2022, now lets talk about financial aid, and how to pay for it!

My D was invited to FTG but had a conflict and ultimately was unable to attend. Today she received the Provost Award letter so we are thankful her inability to attend FTG didn’t impact her award.

We were not even invited but today my son received the provost award letter also.

Today in the mail, I got a letter saying that I received a Dean’s Excellence Award worth $3000 for 2018-2019. I’m OOS and it’s nice to get a scholarship considering how Penn State doesn’t give them often, but it’s not enough to win me over.

Heartbroken after receiving the financial aid package for my son today. How will Penn State fill these spots what they are giving kids they can’t afford to go to Penn State, so sad.

@MomNama Did you run a Net Price Calculator before your son applied to Penn State? They are pretty up front that they don’t give much, if any, aid. There are always people who are shocked and I’m heartbroken for those, like your son, that had their heart set on Penn State!

@jlhpsu, Yes we did and it was 22,000 that we could do but not what they are saying now, my question is how will they fill up the school?
Thank god for UMASS Commonwealths Honors College, my son mostly like go there but waiting for RPI they come out on Saturday.

Penn State will lose lot of scholars this year.

The number of students who are accepted is greater than the number of students who end up attending, so they’re aware that many students will choose to go elsewhere for various reasons. If their yield calculations were off, they might turn to a waitlist (not sure if PSU has been using one this year) or accept more students in the next few months (rolling admissions means new apps may be coming in even now).

Or just have a slightly smaller freshman class, depending on the numbers. But PSU gets lots of applicants and they have previous years’ data to draw from. Whatever happens probably won’t be a surprise to them.

@MomNama - We live in Mass. My daughter chose PSU over UMASS. The particular engineering she was interested in was far better at PSU. Four years later…no regrets. Believe me, they fill the school. Two years ago they were overbooked.

@MomNama They will fill them up with people who can pay lol

I get it thank you lol

@Twinmom2014 I am sure they are filling it up I wish I could pay 40,000 a year, they are doing something right…right. Good school but umass honors college is a better choice for us financial.

@MomNama - Obviously we know a ton of kids that go there. Everyone loves it. I also want to add my D was a classically trained dancer and wanted to minor in Dance. UMASS only offers the major. Just another reason we chose PSU. For my D it was a better fit. UMASS is a great school. “Fit” is different from student to student and family to family. He will enjoy UMASS, a great little city too.

My daughter just received a Trustee Scholarship ($15K/year), and along with her financial aid award, will cover tuition, room/board, and meal plan.

@dygibbs penn state awarded this $15k/yr or was it through a private scholarship?

The scholarship is funded by an endowment from the Brook Lenfest Foundation, and the scholarship program is operated by Penn State.

@twinmom2014, we don’t know anyone else going from where we are in Massachusetts, but I a. Going to try my best to see if we can get him there. Thank you for your input and I know my son will love the school just as your daughter did. The question is can I make it happen, for my son.

@dygibbs, congratulations to your daughter…that is awesome!

@MomNama: thank you. What a blessing!

@dygibbs, yes it is a blessing, she rocks, to get the Brook Lenfest Foundation scholarship, out of all that applied, that is awesome.

@dygibbs - Hooray for Brook Lenfest and your daughter!
