<p>No difference in P and NM P scholarships in terms of “prestige” or benefits. </p>
<p>The advantages are that you may (very small chance) get bumped up to larger scholarship and that you get the Explore experience which is quite fun. You get to see yourself at USC during the middle of a semester-- staying with a current scholarship student. It is a great way to see about “fit” up close and personal. </p>

<p>Congratulations to all of the kids (and parents) who received a big envelope. My daughter was wondering if anyone has started an admitted student FB page . Other schools have done this and it is so much fun for them.</p>
<p>@aac5449 I got it by regular mail. I’m also in Southern CA about an hour away from L.A., so hopefully you’ll be getting a Dean’s scholarship soon!</p>
<p>Just a reminder…National Merit Scholars who enroll at USC also receive a $1000 per year NMFoundation Scholarship. Some alumni or schools do award NMScholars small scholarships which can be added to those mentioned. </p>
<p>National Merit Scholarships are for 1/2 tuition. If tuition rises, the amount rises as well. Alamemom’s suggestion is to wait until ALL scholarships and financial aid packages are stated in writing before making a final decision regarding college choices. Students have until May 1 to enroll.</p>

<p>For all of those who are wondering about scholarship status: My D received big envelope Jan27. On bottom of 2nd page of acceptance letter (Official Admission Conditions and Further Info) there’s a Merit Scholarship Status paragraph that reads “Congratulation, you have been selected as a finalist for Presidential Scholarship”…</p>

<p>@BiomedFather–there is a lot of detailed speculation on this topic in other current threads in this USC Forum. It’s a complex question, since they do not officially publish total number of those invited (finalists), or total number who come for the interview, or the total number of scholarships awarded. They have indicated they sent out about 1000 admissions packets at the end of January, but we know that some of that number will not be invited to interview for the top prizes. I have personally guessed (based on a little voodoo and 7 years of watching posts to this forum) that about 80% who are invited come to Explore; of those, about 2/3 will be offered the scholarship they were up for, and a small percent will be bumped up to a higher award. To put a positive (and realistic) spin on this–more than half of those invited to interview will receive the scholarship they are up for or more. That surely beats the odds of being invited to USC Explore in the first place–which was 3 out of 100!</p>
<p>The rest will be awarded scholarships, too, but may receive a step or two down. It appears to me (again, my guess from reading tea leaves and talking to admissions reps at the Explore session for Trustee interviews) that about 2/3 of those offered Trustee /Mork/Stamps matriculate, while possibly 25% of those offered Presidential come to USC. I’ve deduced some of these imaginary numbers based on the total number of matriculating scholarship winners, posted in USC’s their freshman profile --see latest year here: <a href=“http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/documents/FreshmanProfile2013FINAL.pdf”>http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/documents/FreshmanProfile2013FINAL.pdf</a></p>

<p>Son received a letter today stating that he will receive the NMF Presidential and $1k/yr if he advances to NMF and names USC as first choice, so I’m not sure why he received the admission now. At least we know he’s in.</p>

Congratulations!!! He was very likely admitted in the Dean’s scholar group and they noted the NMSF status. Because the NMF scholarship is larger (and one student cannot be awarded both a Dean’s and Presidential) they sent the letter indicating the larger scholarship.</p>
<p>***Note to worried NMSF who have not yet been admitted: Yes, many NMF are admitted in the late March group and yes, if you meet the three criteria you will receive the NMF Presidential. Please find the recent NMF scholarship thread for more info. As always, remember that NMF are not guaranteed admission.</p>
