Conservative a&m

Hi i am a junior from NY and was wondering, is it true that Texas A&M is really as conservative as everyone tells me. Cause I loved the school when I visited but now I’m begging to get the suspicion that I will be an outsider if I go or just not enjoy it cause of different views. Such as like apparently they are really anti gay in college station? Any students have opinions on this or alumni?

A&M probably is the most conservative campus in Texas. I so wanted to go there for that reason.

But what i want to know is if people that aren’t conservative will not enjoy the college or will be outsiders because of their different views. Cause I’m from NY so I’m not conservative.

bump

I doubt it, there are still liberals & the LGBT community there.

I personally wouldn’t recommend A&M for an out of stater who identifies as non-conservative. It is the absolute epicenter of everything associated with Texas-style conservatism and OOS students make up less than 5% of the total population. It is honestly about the worst school a northeastern liberal could choose unless he or she intentionally wanted to experience something 180 degrees different from what they know.

I wouldn’t say I’m like a crazy liberal. I just am from NY so I was brought up differently, like not religiously or anything, that what I mean as liberal. But thanks for all the responses really helped

"unless he or she intentionally wanted to experience something 180 degrees different from what they know. " - you say that as if it’s a bad thing.

Haha. I just don’t wanna become an outsider or be in a really weird situation. But everyone I have talked to from out of state that went there loves it so…

A&M is definitely a love it or hate it type of place. Individualistic sorts tend to fall in the latter category, but those who are attracted to the obsession with Aggie traditions, spirit, etc. one finds in College Station generally tend to love it.

" But everyone I have talked to from out of state that went there loves it so… " - which should mean more than what those who never went say about it.
I always like to point out that I, as a conservative, attended 2 universities that were super liberal & had many professors who were extremely liberal (one flat out claimed to be a Marxist) & I just listen to the liberal point of view straight from the proverbial horses mouth. Most of us conservatives don’t have too many choices. But when it comes to a liberal attending a conservative school, forget it!! lol

@franko5150 Are you familiar with the concept of self selection? Many people visit places like Oberlin and Berkeley and decide they are way too liberal for their taste. Is their opinion about those places not valid if they opted to go to Baylor instead? The same principle holds true for A&M. The OP specifically mentioned concern about being an outsider. Any non-Texan who also has (a) liberal leanings and (b) an aversion to Aggie traditions will most certainly find him/herself in that category. The OOS students who went there and loved it were looking for a place where being told not to walk on the grass or to take off their hats was OK; this is not the general population, however. A&M is a great place for a very specific subpopulation. It would have been a personal hell for me. Different strokes for different folks.

I’m very familiar with it. That’s why I’m at Texas Tech now.

I was born & raised in Texas. And I would not say I am really conservative at all, more like just middle of the road. I think you would fit in just fine here at A&M. There are almost 60,000 students and I am sure you will find your place somewhere! I love A&M and have never experienced any professors that are super conservative (actually the opposite) but I have ran in to very few die hard conservatives here. I also know that there is a lot of LBGT people attend A&M. I even know a few gay people myself. I would say for the most part in college station people may put off this “super conservative” and “anit-gay” vibe, but in reality there are very few people that are like that.

Can you visit?

It is conservative and there are lots of unique traditions, but it is also a friendly place with a great college town.

It wouldn’t be for me and wasn’t for my kids, but my H, who is both liberal and foreign born, loved it.

@franko5150 And if I had it back, I would go there instead of liberal-infested UNT, even in spite of the extra costs, primarily for that reason. I cannot stand the PC-zealot bleeding hearts and hipsters here. Also, the Greek life is really awesome there compared to UNT. You only get one chance at college, and I screwed it up. Oh well.
