I'm considering applying for a job at Barnes and Noble. I've never had any work experience in a retail store before. The most I've done was tutor for pay. But working in a bookstore seems interesting to me and getting paid doesn't seem too bad either! Now what I want to ask those of you who already have jobs..

1) What job do you have? How much time do you spend there? How do you handle school and your job at the same time?

2) How much do you get paid? How do you plan to spend this money?

3) Any other comments about high school employment.

Oh, I've always wanted to work at a B&N. I love the atmosphere there. Anyway.

1) I work at Kumon, which is sort of like a tutoring company specializing in math and reading. I work 9-10 hours a week, two days a week after school, usually from 2:30-7:00. My job isn't as demanding as a lot of other jobs, so I guess I'm lucky when it comes to time management. I have yet to have several big things due the next day after work. When I do have big assignments due, I finish them ahead of time to lighten the workload. Generally, I don't stay up any later on work days than I do on non-work days; I'm just more tired when I finally climb into bed. (:

2) I get paid $7.50/hr (still waiting for a long-promised raise!). Right now, I'm just keeping all the money in my bank account because I don't really have much to spend it on. My parents pay for gas and car insurance. I have a vague impression that I'm saving for college so that I don't run out of money two months into my college career.

3) It's much better when your friends work the same job.

1) I work at Frys. It's a grocery store owned by Kroger. For the past two weeks I have been working about 24 hours a week. I would like to bump that up to at least 30 hours a week. I handle school and my job by sleeping a bit less and good time management. (BTW, 4 of my shifts this week end at midnight....).

2) I only get paid $6.00 an hour, but I love the job. I have a lot of friends there and I have never been bored on the job yet. I sometimes look forward to showing up to work. It's also a pretty good workout... If you've never cleared a parking lot full of carts, then you don't know what I'm talking about. I spend this money on gas, food, and CDs/other stuff.

3) I love the job because of its variety (I clean, bag, get carts, sometimes stock the shelves, do go-backs, refill the ice, etc) and because I know several people who work there from school.

Come January 1st, I will be making at least $6.75, probably $7.00

You may think 6 an hour isn't much...and it's not. However, I chose the job and prefer it here than somewhere else where I could be making more.

I would looooove to work at Barnes and Noble. Stupid (like, C/D average) slacker-fringe-pothead kid at my school gets a job there, and I don't? Only writer he knows is Kerouac, who I love, but only because Jack was down with the whole drinking/drug thing.

Anyway...

1.) I am a sandwich artist (read: hourly wage slave) at Jimmy Johns. It's an Illinois place, so think of it analogous to Subway. But better. I make sandwiches and clean, basically. I work 15 hours a week about, the Friday night shift, and day shifts on Saturday and Sunday. I did this because the first weeks of school were heck and I couldn't handle a job and all my work. However, I'm having to miss alot of weekends now because Model UN and scholastic bowl competitions are starting. I'm working to get more hours in the week. If I get really cruddy financial aid come December 15, I'm definitely working more.

2.) I make 6.75 an hour; that's without taxes. I don't spend much of this, at all, maybe 20$ a week at most. I'm saving it up for college, slowly and surely. I'll have about 4-5K come next September, which is atleast something.

3.) Flexible hours are something to look for, and I'm guessing the high school life of most CCers definitely warrant this! Also...it'd be different at a B&N, but where I work everyone is a 20 ACT, 2.0 GPA, come-to-work-high boozehound. Actually, it's only 4 or 5 people, but we only have about 15 on staff. :)

It's definitely possible. I got my job halfway through junior year when I was taking three AP's. Got 5's on the two tests I took (AP English at my school is a two-year program), and I got straight A's in all my classes.

This year, I'm taking five AP's, and I'm doing pretty well. Of course, this might be easier for me, because it seems like I work the least number of hours out of everyone who's posted so far.

But I do have time to study and hang out with friends. I'm also involved with several other activities.

I haven't gotten the job yet. Since I'm not 18 yet, I need a work permit (like you would in most states) and I want to get my license before I take on a job.. so I have 2-3 weeks to consider applying. I don't know if the B&N near me takes people under 18, but even if I don't get a job there, there's a bunch of independent bookstores and food shops I could try. I think I'm most interested in having work experience.. preferably somewhere with an atmosphere like B&N. I love going there and seeing people sitting on the floor, reading.

I think I would save up most of the money for college too. I'd spend some on stuff like clothes and random stuff too.

About handling APs and a job, even if I don't have a job, I don't spend all or even most of my time studying.. so I don't think a job would harm my grades much. I would just be spending some of my free time making money.

I'm taking 5 APs this year and I do have much more work than I did last year.. so if I had a job, I'd try to take shifts that aren't on my busiest homework nights.. yep, I think little considerations like that will ensure that you won't die in school or whatever.

i only work about 5 hrs a week. i get $7 per hr, but since i only work sundays, its more like $10.50 bc i get time and a half. im taking 2 aps this yr and doing self-study for 2, and still do tons of ecs. idk, i guess i never sleep. im constantly tired :( but i like my job bc all i do is get shoes for ppl

i worked at kumon, and i couldn't stand it. mainly because where i'm from everyone is obsessively competitive and it shows even through the elementary school kids and their obsessive parents.

yeah, it was horrible. i quit after half a year. but b and n sounds good.
