Anyone familiar with transportation to and from campus to the airport? Distance? Does the university run any service for Thanksgiving.

(Older son is in a more metro area that has an airport limo service he uses routinely and the student organization at his U provides bus service to 2 airports for Thanksgiving. Convenient!!)

The airport is in Cheektowaga, about 7 miles or 15-20 minutes from UB. There are airport shuttle/taxi/limo services available. Taxi should be around $20. Don’t know if UB ever does airport transportation, but you could call the Transportation office or check out the public transportation links here:

Maybe you can find out at orientation if you’re lucky. We found there were very few opportunities to get questions answered, but YMMV.

Found the answer on line. Several airport shuttle services available. Can book in advance. Sounds perfect. Don’t like the idea of my son in a taxi by himself. Somehow a shuttle company affiliated with the airport seems a safer bet. Won’t need it until Thanksgiving, but like to have all my info in advance as I think of these things.

I believe UB sends something out about transportation to and from the airport for Thanksgiving break. My sons freshman year, when he flew back to Bufalo he could not find the suttle so he just took a cab back to campus. This year he is going to have a car so no need for air transportation.

My best advice- have him find somebody with a car. This is especially easy in the dorms. My freshman year, there was a guy in my hall (a local) who drove people to the airport frequently. Even if they aren’t best friends, most students are happy to drive somebody to the airport for a few bucks ($10-$15 is a fair deal, and wayyy cheaper than a real cab or shuttle service)

alot of the taxis are changing the way they service college students.

lets say four friends live on north campus. to save money they all take their luggage, get on the stampede to south and take they taxi there. The fare would be 20 dollars and all four people would split the fair in an effort to save money.

now the taxi companies are claiming that all the luggage that the students cary back and forth, while piling into the taxi is taking a toll on the vehicles. so they resort to charging studente per bag and no longer allows students to split the fair.

i got into the taxi with my friend after completing summer classes. I took buffalo transportation because they cut a deal with UB to offer flat rates for students. from south the the amrak station was about 25 dollars flat, but then had the nerve to try and charge both of us 25 bucks to get to where we need to go. i almost flipped; what makes them think they could charge PER HEAD; its not a bus.

after a heartfelt plea the lady decided to just drive us on the meter to the station instead. it cost about thirty dollars (she was not supposed to do that) and then gave us her number if we ever needed a ride again.

the taxis in buffalo are a bunch of thieves but if your lucky you may find a driver who wont try and run with all of your money.

Thought I’d post this link I found - not sure if it’s a new thing but I’d never seen or heard of it before. UB has chartered buses to transport students to NYC ($100, express) , Rochester ($35), Syracuse ($70), and Albany ($88) six times this year. Prices are round trip and buses leave from Ellicott.
