Hi everybody,
So I’m a transfer student at a California Community college, and I’m currently thinking about withdrawing my applications to some private colleges (Cornell, USC etc) and reapplying next year. This is because I feel that my family’s current financial situation in the 2016 fiscal year really wasn’t representative of my family’s financial situation now. For one thing, our income was $150k+; it is now $50000 because my mom lost her job. I have been told by the financial aid offices of the schools that they will factor my parents’ 2016 taxes into my financial aid award, which I don’t want.
I also feel that I’ll have a stronger chance of admission next year (I’ll finish taking prereqs for my major, I’ll bring my GPA up from a 3.7 to a 3.85+ and I’ll have more volunteering hours under my belt.) I also think that I’ve got a little bit of maturing to do (I’ve just turned 17).
Do you guys know of any adverse effects to doing this? Is it advisable?
P.S. I’m transferring as a Junior.
I have the exact same problem except I’m Independent(old). I quit my job to go to school and I don’t get as much financial aid help as my classmates do, because I used to work even though I have more bills today… thinking about getting a loan for community college (SMC). If there’s nothing you can do, it doesn’t hurt to learning more/wait a year before transferring to save $$$.
Have you been admitted yet? If you have been admitted, you could see if you could defer attendance for a year, then you would not have to reapply.
No, I haven’t been accepted yet; decisions come out around June for transfers. I asked them if I could defer enrollment if I were to be accepted, but they told me that I wouldn’t be able to take classes at any other college in the meantime, or I would need to reapply.
