Contacted by FA

Has anyone else been contacted with a question by the financial aid people recently? Do you think there is any remote possibility that this is a good sign, or at least a sign that you are not yet in the reject pile? (I know I'm grasping at straws. :) )

I really hope that it is a good sign for you (and my gut thinks that it is), but I would not start tossing confetti yet. Remember there is a new admissions team as well as changes to the financial aid process, so I don't think you can get a definitve answer.

From: DARTMOUTH COLLEGE Financial Aid Handbook 2007-2008 (page 11)

What is “Verification”?
*According to the U.S. Department of Education, the application information of at least 30% of all students receiving federal aid must be “verified.” Dartmouth verifies all financial aid application information via tax returns, W-2(s), and other forms documenting income and/or assets. *

Students and their families must complete a Federal Verification Worksheet and submit all requested documentation. Federal SEOG, Pell Grants, ACG and SMART Grants, Perkins Loans, and Unsubsidized/Subsidized Stafford Loans will not disburse to your student account until verification is completed. (Students may work for 60 consecutive days through the Federal Work-Study Program during the verification process.) I

f changes need to be made to the FAFSA information originally submitted to the Federal Processor, the Financial Aid Office will make those corrections based on tax returns and Verification Worksheet data, and a new federal student record will be created. If that new student record changes your eligibility, you will receive a new financial aid award letter with a message detailing the reason for the change.

According to federal regulations, you have until the end of the academic year (or until the end of the last term in which you are enrolled) to complete the verification process. However, if aid has not been disbursed to your account by the time of check-in each term, you may not be allowed to use your “anticipated” financial aid credits if you have not submitted required documents or completed the verification process.

I know this may not be the answer that you want to hear, but I think you just need to hold out another week.

All the best.

S

I think that's a good sign.

Of course this is good! There's no way they are wasting time doing packages for everyone who applies for aid...that's like 9500 kids (60% of 15,700)...I'm sure they pass the acceptees on to fin. aid as they decide. Others may disagree, but I just don't see them doing packages for the whole pool "just in case"...that would really mess with their money.

Is that Verification Worksheet the one submitted through IDOC?

yes, the verification worksheet are submitted through IDOC

Umm, Idk... BUT every college which has contacted me about FA has sent me either an admit or likely letter (Dartmouth included).

Remember the money is just on paper and nothing is actually disbursed until a student registers for class.

D_rolla, our experience was the same as yours that everyone who sent out FA info gave an acceptance (since D had received a likely letter early in her cycle when Dartmouth's verification letter came, I already knew she was in). However, I also personally know students who got verification letters who have been denied admissions.

the same thing happened to me, I forgot to finish a form or something, and I was accepted ED

I though we HAD to sumbit your financial aid information even before acceptances come out. Otherwise, we'll get admitted and won't get any money... I was contacted by the FA ppl well over a month ago and I didn't get a likely letter....so I think it means nothing. Sorry. Gotta wait for it!

This wasn't a verification letter....it was a request for some information that H had left off FAFSA. Haven't gotten an inquiry on it from anyone else.

I certainly agree that it probably means nothing. Well, maybe it means that they haven't yet been informed that he's in the reject pile (assuming that that even happens).

As I said, grasping at straws! :)

Well, it could be a good sign. After all, this IS pretty late in the process. If you received a letter back in like February, it could mean nothing but now, it's a bit iffy. Decisions go out in 10 days and have probably been made by now with the financial aid packages being finished up and everything.

not to burst any bubbles, but financial aid is completely separate from admissions.

Yes, bulldog, but presumably at some point near the end of the process they must communicate somehow.

Don't worry, though. I don't think that anyone is betting the ranch on this prognostication.

I think it is a good sign. Decisions go out within 10 days and I am 90% sure that they are done with all the decisions. So now it is time for Financial Office to decide how much "money" they will give to those who are accepted.

This time 2 years ago is when we received a "request for more information" letter from D, followed by an acceptance letter March 31, so I also think it's a good sign. D sends their FA package info along with the acceptance letter.

What if we haven't sent in the IDOC forms yet? My mom still hasn't finished her taxes, so it's impossible for me to send in copies of my parents' tax returns. Mine and my dad's are done.. we're just waiting on my mom. Everything else that was required was submitted. Should I contact Dartmouth & IDOC on Monday? Hopefully it'll still be okay to send stuff in that late...

If you are accepted, they will send you an estimated package, which they will amend once and give a final package once they receive all of the information. As there is a very short time between the time you get a decision, and May 1 (the national decision day) I would recommend that your mom gets this finished ASAP as you will not be in a postion to make the most informed decision (especially if money wil end up being a factor).

You will not get finalized packages from any of your schools until they receive the information.

Sybbie719, you were right! S was accepted. :)

Congratulations!!!

I have been waiting all afternoon for you. I even checked the parents thread for an update (yes, I have such a low EQ)
