My son completed all his applications by November 1. Since then, he has started some very exciting projects. He would like to provide the schools with an update of his senior year. What would be the best format - an e-mail to the admissions officer, a letter? Thank you.

When D1 faced this at the start of her second semester senior year, we went to ask her high school's college counselor which was the best way to handle it. He actually placed a phone call (while we were standing there) to one of the top schools she had applied to (Syracuse Newhouse), and asked them how they'd prefer to handle additional information. While he had them on the phone, he was able to give a quick 1-2 minute personal endorsement of her as an applicant. Not only did she get into Syracuse, she got into Newhouse directly, and with a Founder's Scholarship. Although she had excellent credentials, to this day, I think his phone call helped.

Thank you for the suggestion and congrats on your daughter's prior acceptance. I hope she is enjoying Syracuse!

We sent updates by mail. That also worked.

Our school counselors sent out a letter saying that updates can be sent with the mid year transcripts that most of these schools want. They will surely look for those, and a resume, or update letter would have a better chance of being added to the file and perused. If your school does not do this, then time the mailing to get into the files before the transcript is received. Some schools will assess as soon as the info is complete and updated received after that may not be read. Also this is the busiest time of the year for admissions offices, and e-mails may not always be remembered if read.
