Contesting Grades

Random question, but has anyone here contested their final grade and were you succesful? Just wondering. Thanks.

I haven't, but I've heard that it's very, very difficult once the grades have been posted. Most professors will review grades before they go online, but after that, it's nearly set in stone. That's not to say it's impossible, though. If you don't know the reason for one of your grades, definitely contact the professor (email works well for nearly all of my professors in engineering) and ask.

Depends. If there's a legit error assigning the grade in the first place (misgraded final, didn't sum points right, etc) then the professor should just be able to submit a change of grade form and that's it.

It's a bit more complicated if you're appealing the professor's grade and the policies vary somewhat depending on department. See the SCampus for more info.

I've never contested a grade, but I know one guy who did and successfully (or so he claims) lifted a B into an A. So I guess it's possible, if you have a really good argument.

I lifted an A- to an A, but that was due to an error by the TA/professor. That was before grades came out on OASIS.

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

I think I'm going to talk with the prof and ask him to go over the reasons why he graded my final paper the way he did-- what was strong about it, what was not so strong etc. If I'm unable to change the grade, at the very least I want to know why I was graded that way.

Thanks again.
