When Penn accepts ED applicants, is the # based on the other applicants who are applying to that specific undergrad school? I feel like most of the stronger applicants (2300+ SAT) are applying to Wharton, and if Penn accepted applicants regardless of the school they’re applying to, there’d be way too many Whartonites.

I'm pretty sure its based on undergrad school. If you applied to CAS, you'll compete with other people who applied to CAS and not with those who applied to Wharton.
Hopefully this is true because I'm applying to CAS with subpar scores, I would get destroyed by the Wharton applicants.

mhmm I'm pretty positive that each school even has its own admissions committee, which i find nice :)

and its logical too, why should someone with unbelievable writing abilities compete with a math/science genius? that's CAS vs. Wharton/SEAS, two completely different and irrelevant people. i think the different admissions committees are what allows Penn to have such a diverse student body, because you are examined within the context of others like yourself with similar interests.

err, you positive crashingwaves? where did you get that information? my alumni interviewer told me that there are different review committees for each school.

crashingwaves, if there's not much of a difference between Wharton and CAS applicants, why is Wharton's admission rate so much lower? I know they accept fewer kids, but still, I think many times, more qualified applicants apply to Wharton because of the name.

It depends on your interests. My stats are better than most Whartonite stats but I'm just not interested in business as the focus of my undergraduate career.

Though it is for this very "wharton name" nonsense that I am a proponent of changing the name to Wharton University.

Wharton's rate is lower (and it's not really "so much") because it has a smaller class size. It is also focused on business. Not everyone with very high stats wants to go into business...

I am sure I read somewhere that Penn has one committee for all four schools (with the exceptions that M&T, Huntsman, and those joint/dual degree programs have their own)...

The committee consists of: Your regional rep, dean, and a school specific person. The regional rep essentially "pitches" you to this committee and they decide whether to accept/defer/reject you.

ah ok, so "school specific" person is what makes it slight variant then. i knew the committee wasnt EXACTLY the same. good, so wharton and CAS profs wont be lookin at my app...cause i suck at language...and hate business :)

yeah if you read the M&T website, they explicitly tell you they have a different committee... um as far as having on engineering and wharton member... I think the M&T adcoms are specialized to look for their prospective M&Ters, but they will definately have a good knowledge from the Engineering and Wharton schools...
