Controversial Essay Topic?

Hey guys!

I was just wondering your opinion on a common app essay that I had written. It's a quirky and light-hearted topic (option 6) that lets me showcase my more humorous writing style. And it indeed is a true and life-changing experience.

However, straight off the bat it describes some unhealthy and lazy classroom habits. (think sleeping, skipping, spitballs - the 3 Deadly S's). In general it makes me look like a sloth whose perfect GPA is a fluke. The other half is about my eventual turnaround in outlook. I'm worried that although it is unique and could potentially make the essay look funny and refreshing to AdComs, it might still convince them I'm a bad classroom participant. I'm being completely honesty and confessing to a personal fault, so does that mean anything? Should I change the prompt?

Thanks so much!

If you’re saying, “I used to be a sloth, but I have learned my lesson and now I am not.” Then go for it. If not, don’t.

I agree with Ethereality3. If you have truly reformed and matured, and you were not just slacking off in class a few weeks ago, I think it could be a good essay. You will definitely want to acknowledge how you have realized your previous behavior was disrespectful, petulant etc. but I think you already knew that!
