I need to write a paper about a controversial issue. The thing about this is that it needs to be 2 pages, double spaced, and if it's any more than that points are taken off. It drives me insane, because I can't make the font really small or the margins narrower because there's also requirements for that.

The thing is, if I choose a certain controversial issue I'll probably list a bazillion reasons and end up having it be like 3 or more pages, like if I chose stem cell research or abortion or something because there's so many aspects of it.
I need a subject that can be short and sweet. Right now I'm thinking of doing Wal-Mart and its pricing and labor workforce issues, but it just sounds so borrring. So . . . really need some suggestions on the essay topic.

You could talk about assisted suicide/Euthanasia. This topic has been controversial for a long time now. You could write about controversial books like The Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. You could talk about Death Pentalty in your own state whether it is right or wrong. You could write about Religon and Science and its long time feud.

Federal minimum wage.
Shield laws for journalists.
Database to search the federal government.
Lebanon relief.
Death penalty is a good one, yes.
"Good" and "bad"--what defines a good person and a bad person?
Today's society--where's the focus?
etc.

The first four are bills/resolutions that are currently/have been debated and approved.

I had to do that in 8th grade. I chose censorship. It was lots of fun, even if that sounds weird.
I wrote around 7 pages. We had to choose a side, for or against, and write a persuasive paper. Other people did stuff like mandatory AIDS testing, child labor, euthanasia. My teacher didn't let anyone do abortion because it was so played out.

Perhaps you could choose one broader area and focus only on one or two aspects of it that are of particular interest or importance to you. With a limit on length, you would also want to be as pithy as possible--trim as much fluff and fat from your writing as you can.

I have muchos problemas with writing a short essay. I usually have to scrap one or two essays and just start over because I can't write on that topic/with that angle on the topic within the length limit. :o :)

Okay as a parent with 2 teen girls and reading about this coming up in schools alot lately- what about "freaking" or "grinding" dancing...at first it sounds trite, but it is really not-

generational differences
is it sexual or not
do girls and guys really feel comfortable doing it
at schools where it is banned, do kids dance still
shold schools have the right to ban it
does it infringe on free speech to not allow it
why do adults find it so tacky while lots of kids think nothing of it

this was a big issue at my Ds school, and it was just in the paper at another school banning it

I just got a great topic . . . the issue with making English the official language. Thanks to Anniushka who suggested it, and I think it's pretty good, because I can think of probably 3 basic reasons for support right off of the top of my head.

Having an essay limit is such a headache ><. 2 pages, double-spaced, in my opinion, is really short for an argumentive essay. I doubt a traditional 5-paragraph essay could even be decently squeezed into one this way.

^ 2-pages double spaced...that would be hard to fit even 3 decent sized paragraphs in it, let alone 5.

Last year I wrote my controversial topic essay on agricultural subsidies (I'm really interested in agricultural economics) and got a 97. It's one that is more logic-based, and there are a lot of statistics.
Plus, my teacher is a ditzy wannabe-teen who probably had no idea what I was writing about, which usually helps.

What purpose? Well okay, I think it has some purpose, I just don't like it. Same with the Senate....

Personally I like tight essay limits, not that I wouldn't use the extra space but when everyone adheres to the same restrictions there's more of a focus on quality and word economy.

death penalty for juveniles. its really short cuz you can argue either side but all arguments are null and void cuz supreme court ruled it unconstitutional. so you can say its inhumane, etc and talk about the s.c. decision. its still a controversial issue cuz many ppl believe that some crimes committed while a juvenile are heinous enough to deserve death. i had the same requirements smore yr and my essay turned out well.
