Converting IGCSE and IB grades to gpa

How does one loosely convert grades from IGCSE (freshman and sophmore) and IB (junior and senior) grades to gpa?

IGCSE ranges are: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F(not sure)

A* is the highest and either E or F is the lowest

IB ranges are 1-7 for each subject in 6 subjects, plus 3 points for Theory of Knowledge and extended essay with a total out of 45. 24/45 is a pass. A level 7 is generally very very difficult to achieve.

I am not asking for a precise conversion, just a genera way to interpret the scores.

If you google for igcse gpa equivalent, you will get links to a number of different formulas. Here is the link to one from the CIE itself: http://www.cie.org.uk/docs/recognition/Calculating%20GPAs%20for%20IGCSE.pdf

^The link is not working?

Can someone please give a rough idea of each grade is up to a B? So A* is a 4.0, but what’s an A, and what’s a B? Roughly speaking?

Loosely converting according to CIE itself
A* - 4.0
A - 4.0
B - 3.7
C - 3.0
D - 2.3
E - 2.0
F - 1.3
G - 1.0
U - 0

One point is added for A level grades since A level courses are equivalent to AP

For ex. My O levels were 3A* 3A 2B
So:
(4+4+4+4+4+4+3.7+3.7)/8=3.925

My predicted for A levels would be 3A 1B
So:
(5+5+5+4.7)/4=4.925 [this is weighted]

Note how i added one point to my A levels to calculate weighted GPA. Dont add one point to each subject if u are calculating unweighted gpa.

Basically IB 7= A+ (4.3 or 97%+), 6= A (4.0, over 90%), 5= B (3.0), 4=C (2.0), below 4 is not passing for individual subjects but it is possibly to get the IB diploma while scoring below 4 on some subjects. The IBO website explains the diploma calculations. It’s a little complicated.

Note that if you apply to college with transcripts that show multiple grading scales/grading systems as my D did with traditional US grading scale and then IB 7pt grading scale, universities and colleges will use professional judgement to determine your overall GPA. This may only become an issue with some schools that offer automatic merit aid based on a certain GPA. If you are counting on that, follow up with admissions to make sure they calculate your GPA to meet the criteria. Good luck!

Hi, this data is for IGCSE so does it go with A levels too

Yes, except for G and U.

I agree with Apollo6…colleges will figure it out. My DD did 9th and 10th grades at a 0-100 school and 11 and 12th at an IB school. She had no issues except for our State U that did automatic merit aid based on GPA…a quick email and that was cleared up.

Hi, My son did his IGCSE (9th and 10th) and moved to US IB school and currently in 11th. Local school (Florida) is not ready to accept 10th board exam by CIE and give his GPA, they would like to consider his 9th grade local IGCSE school grading also and that brings his GPA drastically down. If we use his 10th grade board exam only his GPA is good at 4.00. WES also agreed and recommended that IGCSE is a 2 year course and his final GPA is 4. What best can I do, please guide us.

Hi! According to Fullbright B is equivalent to 3.3 while here it says 3.7, which one will I consider then? Kinda confused.

I saw this thread here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/nepal/1540960-a-level-grades-to-gpa-conversion.html
According to what muhammad9211 stated there that B is equivalent to A- or B+, what does that mean? when will I consider it as A- or B+?

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
@Usman1 The whole premise of the thread, as started 5 years ago was to provide a “loose” conversion. Your question is asking for the hard-and-fast rule. If you need to convert for GPA for a particular application, you are better off starting a new discussion, Or even better, ask the organization that you would be sending the application what they want you to do.
