Convince me why NOT to apply as undeclared

Hey guys, sorry for all of the threads, this is the last one, i swear! :P

I definately want to be an electrical engineer major at UCSD, however, I feel that it may be harder for me to get in if i write that down as my intended major… so why can’t i just say im undeclared and then go to engineering later??

which campus is best for EE also?

Thanks again!!!

You can put down EE as your first major and something non-engineering as your second, and still be accepted into that second major if they don't want to accept you into the engineering major.

You should put EE as your intended major. If, for some reason, EE becomes an impacted major, it would be hard (if not impossible) for you to transfer into that major.

@r-akt - cool idea, thanks! :)

@COLLEGE! - umm.. is EE usually impacted?

for UCSD, they accept you to the university before they even look at your major.

thats such nonsense... some majors need more points than others...

He means that you will be accepted into UCSD first, and then assigned to your major. If you're not good enough for that major, you won't get it, but you'll get your alternate major (assuming it's not impacted), or at least undeclared.

Yeah, you're definitely better off going with the major you actually want to pursue. I'm sure they know all the tricks we try to pull, and can and will make your life more difficult later...

i've heard that ee will be going impacted sometime soon. however thast just what i've heard, not neccesarily true

I heard it's pretty easy to switch majors and that it doesn't really matter whether or not you declare a major in the first year or so because you'll be too preoccupied with completing GEs rather than actually focusing in on your intended major.

In my opinion you should always put down an impacted major. That way you'll give yourself the most options. EE used to be impacted because of one giant enrollment year. That class has graduated and department is running at around two thirds capacity I believe.

Right now I don't think EE is impacted. However, if it does get impacted in the next year and you apply for a major other than EE, judging from your certainty to study EE, you would be very disappointed because transferring to an impacted major is pretty much impossible. r-akt is right: you'd be better off putting EE as your first major and something else as your second preference. That way, even if you don't get admitted as EE, you will still be able to go to UCSD. Good luck!

Ok, so lets say I put EE as my top priority, then something else for second...

if EE is impacted and I dont get in to EE, but get into my second, I cant transfer to EE... so I dont want to go to UCSD then

if EE isnt impacted, its the same points as the other major, so It wouldnt matter, right?

lets say I get in to my second major, but EE is not impacted, could I get into EE then???

also, when you get your letter of acceptance, do they say if you got in to your 1st or 2nd major???

thanks!

they say what major you get in. if ee is impacted, they just say you get admitted to ucsd/college; this year beng came in a seperate jacobs school letter, a few weeks later.

i think you should put some crazy major that no one has ever heard of.

Yes you get admitted to the university before they look at your major. Only after do you get admitted, do they send your application to the engineering department to take a look. If engineering accepts you, then great! you're in EE. If they don't, then booo, you get in as either ur second choice or as undeclared.

Last year I would've gladly told you to apply as undeclared instead of EE. Gets rid of some of the competition for getting in. LoL Jk! Jk! Jk! that would be totally messed. =]

But seriously? If you want EE, apply for that when you're going in. Otherwise, you're gonna end up with about 0.5% chance of ever transfering in because EE is Impacted and the only way you'll get to transfer in is if either: 1) All the EE people decided to go to Berkeley instead. 2) all the EE people got into an "accident" and are no longer able to continue their education at UCSD. 3) you kick down some doors and threaten the dean of the engineering college with a few kg of C4
