So this weekend, at the movies, my crush asked me to the prom. The problem is, my parents don't want be to go... I don't know why, but I'm guessing its because of the cost and other stuff. They keep on coming up with excuses.

So I was wondering if I could somehow convince them. Any advice people? I'm a senior, and I didn't go last year.

As a parent I like it when my D asks me why I am recommending a certain thing. I would ask your parents why they seem reluctant for you to go. Listen to their concerns- and don’t immediately counter what they say. Ask them what actions you can take that might help them think differently. Tell them that you would like to go as it is a special part of your high school experience and assure them that you would like to work with them to find an acceptable solution so that you could go and they would feel comfortable.

@kinderny My parents can’t stand when I ask them “why”. To them, their word is their word and I don’t need to have a reason as to why, so I don’t know if that would work for everyone.

But I tend to agree. I would try to find out exactly what their reasoning is and then offer ways to make them feel more at ease. You should never miss prom, especially if you actually want to go.
