So, just to make sure, we can't recieve any financial aid for the admitted students weekend, correct? Some schools pay for flights and housing, but I suppose we can only attend this event as long as we can pay for it, right?

You don’t pay for the actual weekend, you just pay to get there. But bring some cash for sardonic t-shirts!

Chicago gives out some funding for the flight there and back, but you can’t get it unless it’s listed in your chicago account under visiting. Otherwise, you have to come up with a way of getting there all by yourself. I am poor enough to have gotten my enrollment deposit waived, but i didn’t get a travel grant. I’m going to be driving in (cannot afford the plane ticket, but gas costs about as much).

Darn it… That’s frustrating. Like coming up with the costs of living won’t be hard enough as it is.

It’s rough. Hey-- Colorado! I’m there, too. In view of the flatirons. Where are you (NSEW?) The drive isn’t that terrible (14-15 hours)

I’m in Denver. You? (For some reason, I don’t see a lot of CO applicants on CC.) And I guess the drive isn’t horrible, but the weekend is during school, so that’d just be 1-2 more missed days that I’m not sure I can afford.

And I’m not even positive yet that I’ll be attending Chicago. I’m still waiting to hear back from JHU, Berkeley, Princeton, and Yale. And I got into NYU, but I don’t know about financial aid yet. But I would like to attend the admitted students weekend at whichever school I plan on going to.

I’m in Boulder. Yeah, CO applicants are somewhat rare on CC (maybe because funding for our public schools sucks so bad that a lot of people aren’t serous about college?) I confirmed Chicago sight unseen, so I’m definitely taking 2 days off school to go visit. 2 days isn’t that much for a senioritis-ridden April. ;)

good luck on your other schools! Chicago >> JHU, though. ;)

Yeah, Chicago is better than JHU. My top choice is definitely Princeton, then Yale, and then Chicago. So I just want to be sure. That means having to wait until April 1 though.

And I suppose 2 days off isn’t bad, but I’m in all AP classes this year, and missing even one day is total hell for me. Especially so soon before AP exams. :p

And I agree with your assessment that our public school funding sucks. It’s quite unfortunate. We were actually talking about that in my AP Psych class, how we have one of the most educated populations but the worst public school funding. I suppose it’s because a lot of out-of-staters move here for the mountains.

@insomniac: ditto, except it’s IB exams for me.
Especially since I’d have to fly from Iceland to (probably) NYC & then drive/fly to Illinois.

So I’d miss like 4-5 days of school… :S (and that’s a week before exams)

I feel your pain on the AP and IB as I’m doing both. But, it’s worth it to me.

Princeton was my first choice (after I realized MIT’s humanities department is not for me), but I don’t really like how isolated it is. My princeton interviewer loves chicago, too. He said that the education at chicago is better than princeton, which is kinda funny considering he’s supposed to be promoting princeton. But, my chances of getting into princeton are so small that it’s worth more to me to ensure I love my dorm at chicago than wait for my princeton rejection to be sure. Princeton is amazing if you don’t mind living in the suburbs.

Well, pretty much every school I applied to with the exception of Princeton is in a major city. And I visited Princeton and just fell in love with the whole town. I like how you can easily get to NYC or Philly by train, though. So it’s like you can enjoy the city life, but you don’t have to live in it. I was deferred SCEA by Yale, so I don’t think that I’m an automatic rejection at Yale/Princeton, but I do agree that my chances are slim. I still don’t want to give up on my dream of Princeton just to ensure a good housing situation at Chicago, especially as I’m sure I’d be happy in any house there. Haha. But I totally know where you’re coming from. At first, I was worried about being rejected from all of my schools and then having to enter crappy housing at CU - Boulder because I waited so long for decisions from other schools…

I confirmed early mainly because I just knew that Chicago is the best fit for me. Even if I got into Princeton, I think I would go to Chicago (I’d probably have to visit Princeton, even if just for the brag factor). I just looked at my nine schools and decided that Chicago was the best fit and I’d be happiest there. Plus, I’m getting a free trip to Israel over the summer from chicago hilel, and I and I found my perfect science programs… It has everything I want, and it’s a bit closer to home (it is conceivable to drive), so why not just confirm and not draw out the agony of waiting? It wasn’t only to ensure good housing. It was the right choice for me. That’s my logic.

I just don’t want to be like a kid at my school who applied to HPY, and CU-Boulder. He got deferred SCEA from Yale, and didn’t decide to apply to any safety schools other than CU. he’s been a real jerk to me, though, so I can’t feel toooo bad for his predicament. At least you have a couple mid-range schools thrown in! CU housing is frightful, especially the engineering dorms.

There’s a guy at my school who did that, too! And he is SUCH a jerk, but he got rejected from Stanford SCEA, so I was a little pleased, as horrible as that sounds. I suppose his arrogance just shone through in his essays and interview.

And I really didn’t want to go to Boulder, though I needed the safety. I made sure to apply at four mid-range schools seeing as I knew that Yale and Princeton were huge reaches for me (and everyone, pretty much). It just seems more sensible.

But I’m very happy that you’ve found your perfect fit school. Perhaps I’ll even see you there!

For those of you who are flying, are you coming into the O’Hare or Midway airport? I think I’ll do Midway because taxi fares to and from UChicago will be significantly cheaper.

Most def do Midway. I’m driving in, so idk, but I checked fares and midway looks to be a bit cheaper, too.

From Midway, the 55 bus takes you straight to campus.

Chicago offered to pay for my travel . . .

“We know it helps to see things for yourself, and we are delighted to be able to offer you a special opportunity to visit our campus during our Admitted Student Overnight Programs. These programs will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 15-16 or April 22-23. We are offering to cover your travel expenses to attend one of these programs. If you wish to take advantage of this offer, please follow the instructions below.”

^^^ yep, this is on another board, too. They offer it to some people, but there’s no getting the $$$$ if they haven’t already offered it to you. You’ll get a “sorry, no.”

oh, lucky! I bet they do that for the very desirable students because if it was based on need only i’d definitely get it.

according to grace, it’s a combo of need and geographic location. not necessarily merit, though that can play a part.
