Okay, so for anybody applying for the architecture or art school at Cooper Union im sure your aware that the home test is gonna be released around late January(unless your ED for Art). I understand that the Art home test requires more mixed media utilization, though I was surprised when I did some research and found that the Architecture home tests are to be printed out through email. Essentially, from what I've seen of prior year Architecture home tests, they were done on plain white copy paper after they were printed on(the questions and grids/guides). Art mails in their work, and that artwork could range from a painting to a collage or a drawing- because its essentially just open ended questions that you prepare in your own way. Anybody here that is applying for Cooper Union Arch school probably knows that copy paper is complete s**t to actually design/draw on- so filling out a home test on that would be horrible(which i see most people doing). I advise anybody that is reading this and planning on taking the hometest to print it out on light-medium lb drawing paper. Something like Strathmore 400 series cut into 8.5x11 sheets will fit into any inkjet printer. I have never actually read one of the home test emails that Cooper Union sends (I guess that nobody ever screenshotted them and posted it online). So i have no idea if it states whether or not this is possible.

I honestly dont believe that Cooper Union would only allow arch student applicants to only permit people to do the hometest on copy paper (Im not definite though lol).

I wont be collaborating on the actual Arch hometest when test comes(you cant), though if anybody else is taking it in january then post here! I wont be surprised if this thread actually gets no replies/views/other applicants because it seems not alot of the applicants actually are on College Confidential. If anybody is taking the Art hometest i'd love to help(lol I've done lots of research on both hometests).

ayy I’m applying to CU RD for arts too!

I am also applying RD for Arts.

@lbmatson @daisygarland Theres gonna be a Cooper Union rep at my schools college night, ill remember to ask some stuff about the art hometest when im there

Great - I am from TN so Cooper Union doesn’t come around here.

@lbmatson @daisygarland the Cooper Union rep knew less than me. I asked him when in January the RD home tests will be release and he said “uhhh i think… November?” lol

Thanks anyway! No one in TN has ever heard of Cooper Union so no info hear.

@lbmatson I live in NY and nobody here really knows about Cooper Union either! Its very under the radar for your everyday kid

yeah I live in WA and NOONE has heard of it either… even my school art teacher

@daisygarland my friend just found out his mom went to cooper union, and lol my art teacher praises cooper union as the holy frail of art schools

I meant to type 'Holy Grail" lol

Has anyone been asked by CU to apply during a NPD review by someone at CU? I read online that they ask a few individuals to do this.

Has anyone been asked by a Cooper Union admissions rep to submit their portfolio early at an NPD event? I heard that they do this for artists that the will accept.

@lbmatson I have heard of art schools doing that at national portfolio days, im not sure about for Cooper Union though — I think they would definitly especially if the students artwork is exceptional

What exactly do they look for in a hometest? I want to make sure it is mixed media and very different. Also is the hometest most important and then portfolio?

@siobhan123123 For art and arch its usually mixed media, though honestly i believe the art hometest is 500x times harder and more competitive than the arch hometest (they test different things sorta - creativity but different ways)

From the home tests that I have seen for ART - they are suckers for mixed media pieces that all culminate in a very strong theme. For art, i would suspect that it has A LITTLE more weight than the portfolio(which is already huge)

And for arch, I have only seen a few architecture home tests and most of them didnt look to nice… mainly just cut and pasting stuff and charcoal drawings— some of the ones that got accepted looked like they were done overnight (though they give like 4 weeks lol)

The art hometests are so much more impressive than the arch home tests from what I have seen, what are you majoring in??

I am majoring in art! yes, thank you so much! I am working on diversifying and developing my portfolio and i’m super eager to get the hometest! do you have an email address so we could further talk?

@siobhan123123 hey yeah ill pm u my email

I am also majoring in art by Early Decision! Thank you alot! btw, i am considering CU’s architecure cuz i prefer it more… i apply to art just because there is no ED for architecture so do u guys have any tips for home test in architecure??
