Cooper Union

Does ANYONE know anything about the school Cooper Union in New York City?

I recently heard about it and I grew interested in it, and it's free tuition....

It has 3 schools: art, architecture, and engineering. All 3 are among the best in the country in their respective fields.

What do you want to know about it?

CU '07

Everything!

It's very selective so be sure to apply with good credentials.

Yea I'm interested in Art and possibly Architecture.

Do you still get a good education in other fields?
How is housing, and what part of the city is it located in?

My grandfather went there...

All he ever talks about is how he only had to pay for books. That's the limit of what I know about the school.

Art and architecture admissions is heavily portfolio based and not really numbers based. I'm not sure where you live, but I think they have a portfolio review day where you have a chance for them to critique your work. I know there used to be a very active Cooper Union art community on livejournal. A lot of them post their portfolios online, so you might want to take a look to see your competition.

The overall admissions rate is 10%, but since engineering is close to 20-25%, you can imagine how low the rate is for art and architecture.

The Cooper Union is pretty much a specialty school... and couple that with the fact that it's tiny, you don't really get as much of an overall/general education as you may get at a larger school. You have to take 8 courses in the humanities and social sciences, but I think that's about it.

People here are pretty passionate about their work - everybody works their butt off, but it's well worth it. It's a pretty tight-knit community so you really get to know everybody.

There's housing for first year students, but afterwards you have to make your own housing arrangements. Many students get together and share an apartment in the city.

The Cooper Union is located in the East Village. That's right by NYU. It's probably one of the best neighborhoods to live. Good nightlife, lots of great restaurants, and it's pretty safe. There's always somebody out on the streets (except for maybe 4am-6am).

GPA note: VA school uses depressed grading scale 80-83%=C+, 84-89%=B, 90-93%=B+...
